Default 98 M6 problems

Hey everyone, first post here... Nice to meet you all... <img src="gr_stretch.gif" border="0">

Ok down to business. I bought a 98 Z28 back in August of last year and since then I've been having a few problems with the M6 transmission. Sometimes when I put it in first and then take off without holding the gear shift firmly in first place, it'll throw out of gear. It jars the whole drive train and it sounds like I hit someone... I've heard of people having this problem with 2nd or 3rd gear, but never first.

Also, when the car is cold (right after start up on a cold morning) it likes to grind when going into 5th. Clutch full disengaged all the way to the floor and it still likes to grind.

The shifter feels kinda loose too. Probably should've paid more attention to that when I was buying the car but my want for a Z28 kinda clouded my judgement. Anyway... Anyone else had these kind of problems? Should I expect to have to replace the transmission or would a rebuild be a better way to go?

Thanks in advance for all your help!

Jason

Sounds like your synchronizers are worn out. How many miles on the car? That grind going into 5th definitely sounds synchro related since it only does it when it is cold.

Get the T56 rebuilt, it will cost around $750 total. Might as well throw a new clutch/slave into the tranny when all the rest is fresh, if this car has a stock clutch they are worthless.

Welcome to the site!

Thanks for your reply

The car has around 57k and as far as I know the clutch is stock.

$750 is much more attractive than dropping 2,500 for a new transmission
