Default Cags?

Well, Ive talked to my dad about it, and I keep annoying him b/c I cant understand wtf hes talking about. So, from what I'm understanding, CAGS ( computer aided gear selection ) makes you skip shift from 1st to 4th if you are shifting outta first before 2000 rpm's. He said its for emissions, and it boosts the epa ratings, well, Sorry for my lack of knowledge, why does GM want the EPA to have to 'wind out' the car? I mean, shifting early, and keeping the rpm's low, uses less gas correct? I know you can !CAGS with something for like 15 bucks, a "skip shift eliminator" if you will.

Can anyone explain this to me?

It seems you have the picture backwards on the function. If you skip to 4th over 2nd you will not be winding out - you will be lugging down. Less RPM/ less emission... It is commonly ( and easily) defeated.

GM can advertise that their vehicles have better fuel economy. In the real world, it doesn't work.

so i have a question about CAGS, i just bought my first F-Body today and it still has the CAGS enabled. of course if i am driving slow, it will make me skip to 4th, but i also noticed that when i downshift, it does not want to go into 1st or 2nd. 3rd is cool, but anything lower and i basically have to be stopped unless i rev it way up as i am droppin gears. does the CAGS work when downshifting as well or do i have a tranny problem?? Thanks, I am still very much a newb!

Should not work when downshifting, only 1-2 shift.( or should I say 1-4)

CAGS actually doesn't work through RPM's, it works though speed, throttle position and coolant temperature.

You can defeat it though reflashing the PCM or the cheap way is to use a resistor where the sensor is under the car, although I can't remember what ohm the resistor is off the top of my head.
