Default Clutch Pedal down for the count!?

Hey, today i was driving my car from Wells Fargo to 24 Hour Fitness and i noticed that my clutch pedal kinda stuck to the floor. i could pull it up and it would be in normal position, but when i pushed it down, it just stayed down there unless i brought it back up. it was getting hard to shift. like really hard. i was grinding gears all the way down clayton road. i tried restarting the car. and it still did it. it felt like the more i pressed in the clutch, the more it would sink. little by little each time, until eventually, i had to pull over and check it out.

i pulled over in the big 5 parking lot and looked by the pedal and i felt my hand deep inside and there was a button that i pushed in and i could start the car with that, but i couldnt shift it into gear. does anyone know why this is happening or what this is? has this happened to anyone else??? ...i hope its not expensive. i was thinking it could just be the linkage?

there is no linkage, it's hydraulic, and your master cylinder most likely just took a **** on you. I'm in the same boat with mine right now.
$125 for the master, and some nice bloody hands later... might want to think about doing the clutch and slave while at it.

It wont look like a long spring but like a curled spring with hooks at each end that grab the clutch pedal frame. I know things are very tight up in there but you should see it.

If there isnt a hook at each end then it is toast. That is what ours looked like.

Clutch Pedal Return Spring Breaks or Scraping Noise When Clutch Pedal Applied (Replace Clutch Pedal Return Spring)
1998-2002 Chevrolet Camaro

1998-2002 Pontiac Firebird

Condition
Some customers may comment about a spring breaking and falling to the floor or a scraping noise when the clutch pedal is applied.

Correction
Replace the clutch pedal return spring using the procedure and part number listed below.

Disengage the lower part of the IP cluster trim plate bezel.
Remove the IP knee bolster.
Remove the left closeout/insulator panel.
Remove the wiring junction block screws and position aside.
Remove the clutch anticipate (start) switch. Do not disconnect the electrical connections.
Remove the clutch actuator rod clip and rod from the clutch pedal.
Disconnect the 3-way electrical connector on the side of the steering column.

Important
Nylon inserts (1, 3) must be present to install the clutch pedal return spring properly. If inserts are not present, try to locate them. They may have fallen to the floor. If unable to locate the inserts, the clutch pedal assembly must be replaced.

Install the right leg of the spring (2) into the bracket.
Rotate and swing the flat part of the spring into the pocket on the pedal.
Using long needle nose pliers, insert the left leg of the spring into the bracket.
Connect the 3-way electrical connector on the side of the steering column.
Install the clutch actuator rod and clip to the clutch pedal.
Install the clutch anticipate (start) switch.
Position the wiring junction block and install the screws.
Install the left closeout/insulator panel.
Install the IP knee bolster.
Engage the lower part of the IP cluster trim plate bezel.

the spring that is connected to the pedal is kinda U shaped. as i press the pedal down, the U shaped part swings toward the engine compartment. is it supposed to be fixed to something or what?
