Default Slipping out of third gear

Hey guys: do any of you get the trans slipping out of third every so often. I recently purchased a b&m shifter but the third slip out problem was there before I switched. Any suggestions thanks

Uhhh, mine did that a few weeks before my tranny went out. It started every so often like you are saying then got worse and worse. Turned out to be a broken shift fork in 4th. Start saving for the rebuild is all I can advise and hope that it doesn't go out.

M/T - Jumps Out Of Third Gear

File In Section: 07 - Transmission/Transaxle

Bulletin No.: 01-07-29-003A

Date: May, 2001

TECHNICAL

Subject:
Transmission Jumps Out of 3rd Gear (Replace Shift Fork, 3-4
Synchronizer Assembly, 3rd Gear Blocker Ring and 3rd Speed Gear)

Models:

1999-2000 Chevrolet Camaro
1999-2000 Pontiac Firebird
with Manual Transmission (RPO MM6)

This bulletin is being revised due to a change in part numbers. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 01-07-29-003 (Section 07 - Transmission/Transaxle).

Condition

Some owners may comment that the transmission jumps out of 3rd gear.

Cause

Condition may be caused by inadequate travel of the 3-4 synchronizer assembly due to the 3-4 shift fork being out of specification or bent.

Correction

Notice : Please review the appropriate section of the Transmission Unit Repair Manual for correct disassembly and assembly instructions. When performing this bulletin, ALL parts listed need to be replaced. The condition originally occurs because of the 3-4 shift fork being out of specification or bent. This eventually results in damage to the synchronizer assembly, the blocker ring and the speed gear. Replace the 3-4 synchronizer assembly, the 3rd gear blocker ring, the 3rd speed gear and the 3-4 shift fork.

Part # Description Qty
12523207 3-4 Shift Fork 1
12523078 3/4 Synchronizer Assembly 1
12523186 3rd Gear Blocker Ring 1

I am having the same issue with my tranny happened maybe 4 times last week. How much would it cost to have the parts listed above installed? I would rather do that then put in new tranny.

Mine does that too. What I've heard is that you have to go so deep into the tranny to replace the fork and whatever else, that you might as well get it rebuilt. I don't know how true that is.

Yep, stick a fork in it.... BTW, it might be a good idea to check the fluid level. I had a fork roast in a grand cherokee transfer case due to lack of oil. Adding oil wont fix it but seeing it low might give you the chance to prevent more serious damage.

90% of the time it is the 3rd/4th slider/syncro assembly. We ussually replave that slider,3rd gear, and do the steel shift fork for $600.That includes pulling the tranny ect to give you an idea.

Ok thanks $600 sucks since I just bought the car. Is is possible I only pused the shifter half way into third thats why it slipped out? I guess I will have to watch for this. I guess I should get it fixed if it continues
Also would this be cheaper if I bought those parts and took it to a tranny shop. Is this really hard for a normal person to do. I dobut I could do it but kind of short on cash right now. thanks

If it were me I'd pull the trans and install it myself that's the easy part and you can do it at home. If you're having doubts about messing with the internals then don't do it. It takes some special tools, a little knowledge and a lot of time for someone who hasn't done it before. Most trans shops get pretty good rates on parts but I'd get a quote on the parts ahead of time.

While you've got the trans out it and they're rebuilding it I'd check the clutch condition, slave cylinder condition, and the pilot bearing. Maybe even replace the pilot. It's cheap and it's easy to do.
