Default Stripped Threads

What do I get for starting the bolt with my fingers, using a torque wrench and following the service manuals torque spec?

Stripped Threads!

Im on the last of the 4 bolts that hold the trans crossmember to the floor, it feels like its getting close, waiting for the click and then it slips all of a sudden and then i get that stripped thread feeling

Anyway... what do I do now?

oh, and the bolt is fine

heli-coil..basically you'll drill out the old threads, tap new threads insert the thread insert and push twist the bolt in there.

Be carefull putting heli coils in there floorpan. They are just a captured/spot welded nut in the pan.You could dis-lodge it during the repair attemt It can be done but keep that in mind.

For a floor pan bolt, I'd probably just tap it to the next larger size, get a bigger grade 8 bolt from the hardware store, put the bigger bolt in there, and call it good. I wouldn't mess with helicoil, but that's just me...

Not unless you have alien fingers, or want to cut holes by the nut.
To the OP tap it to the next size hole, and pray to whatever god you have the welds hold, or you're in for a lot of cussing and and

omg cross-threading sucks. sucks.... sucks. SUCKS. Tow it to a shop. hand them the bolt. point the problem out. get a coffee.. a sausage egg and cheese on an english muffin. walk back to the shop. pick up keys, pay and leave.

lol.. i am a finance guy that dreams of being a mechanic in my spare life.. and I woke up.

Captured nuts are a pain, they've been on GM cars forever... Second Gen Camaro front subframes are held on by captured nuts. If they spin, you have to cut open the floorpan to get at them. Same deal on Fieros... the rear engine cradle uses captured nuts, and they're well known to spin. At least on those, you "only" have to remove the rear bumper and jam a piece of angle iron up in the frame rail to keep it from spinning. But the proper fix involves cutting a hole in the wheel well and either tacking the nut down or welding angle iron around the nut so it can't turn. It's really bad with cars up north (the rust belt) - the bolts will rust to the nuts, and when you try to get them out, the nuts break free and spin instead of the bolt backing out.

I'd still just try tapping it to the next larger size. You have nothing to lose at this point. Don't panic until it spins. It may not.
