Default trouble to reverse

I'm having trouble getting into reverse at 58000 miles, what's wrong?

Posting in this forum, you'd kinda figure that.

Could be a number of things. Time to pull the trans and take it apart and look.

Could be as simple as a bad wire on the reverse lockout solenoid. That'll make it very hard to push over and up and get it in to reverse (since you don't describe the "trouble"). For that you don't have to pull the trans, of course. Just check wires and the plug. If you've had work done recently (clutch change etc), maybe whoever did the work didn't plug it in, or bent the lead in the plug. I've heard of that happening.

Could be worn teeth on the slider ring. Could be worn teeth on the gear. Could be broken shift pads or a broken snap ring. If it's not the bad wire, you HAVE to take it apart to determine the cause. If you decide to do it yourself, don't buy any parts until you have the transmission completely apart and have inspected everything. You'll be down a couple extra days, but you'll save time and money in the long run versus "guesswork".

make sure you dont have any problems with the shifter then move on to:
1. reverse lockout solenoid
2. slider ring for reverse worn (flip it and it can be reused)
3. reverse synco assembly worn or broken
4. a combo of the above and the reverse gear.
as mentioned earlier, take it apart and inspect it first.

Thanks, now I'm thinking my clutch is going. Just made two passes and can't get into 4th at 5800rpms but not a problem otherwise. The only change that I've made is installing headers.

it could be that your headers are heating up the clutch fluid and breaking it down. try bleeding it and filling it with fresh fluid. have you done the drill mod?

hadn't done the drill mod. Actually the only drill mod that I know about is the throttle body. I did find that one of the foil wrapped wires were leaning against the headers, everything else is clear. I now have to check to see what the foil wrapped tube on the right side is carrying.

the foil wrapped wire isnt your clutch line. www.installuniversity.com has a how-to for the drill mod to better explain it. It should be done with all master cylinders.

i have sorta the same problem on an 01 SS when u put it in reverse. It goes into reverse no problem then it pops out and grinds, if you hold it there its fine ... it came with a hurst T handle when it was bought. i dont know if its just the handle or the whole shifter .

It's not the handle or the shifter. You've probably grinded away the teeth on your reverse idler.

First, we need to know more about what exactly it's doing. Does it go into gear and pop out? Does it "click" into gear but nothing happens? Does it feel like it's going into gear, but you can feel something spinning through the shifter?
