personally, when i shift i have different hand positions depending on the shift/gear. but it dose differ person to person bc of height, arm length, ect...
i have performed only a few miss shifts and that was when i started to drive a stick a few years ago. a buddy of mine got a manual tranny a few months ago and all i have to say is hes botchy. he holds the shifter like hes holding a walking stick, w/ his thumb and pointer around the fattest part of the ****. throuout all his shifts, heres a miss, theres a miss, sweet, you grinded third. he also likes to take off in second and wonders what the hell that vibrating is. im like you need to take off in 1st, and not shift at 1500...

i donno, to me its just commoncents. i probably left hand shift from the passenger seat better than he can normally

There's no way I would be able to shift with any degree of speed if I shifted like that diagram (mainly the 2-3 shift) I've never missed a gear in my car when shifting fast. I would be willing to bet I can shift as good as most. I do have my hand backwards like that going into fourth though.

1-2: with hand on right center of shifter ****, pull the shifter towards you and straight down
2-3: with hand on the left rear of shifter ****, put elbow at side and push at a diagonal towards the right
3-4: hand backwards on left center of shifter ****, pull straight down
4-5: see 2-3
5-6: push the shifter away from you and straight down; see 3-4

I have a TKO500 and its a bastard to shift. 1-2 I wrap my hand around the 8-ball like a pistol grip and pull back and to the left hard using my fingers. 2-3 I put the heel of my hand on the rear/left side and slam it into 3rd with no side/pressure (springs are STRONG in the hurst shifter), 4th is the same as 2nd except b/c I have pretty strong springs in the Hurst shifter from TKO and i just pull it back into 4th using whatever is comfy/convenient at the time with no side pressure. 5th usually is done at leisure.

For normal driving it isn't a problem, but once you start getting aggressive, especially on the downshifts (5-4, slip into 2nd by accident) like on a road course having your arm used to going through the motions showed on that page can really prevent a possible disaster.

My friend still has the vid of him mis-shifting his s2000 at sears point where he ended up at over 11k on his programmer. Excellent driver in every respect, but he shifted like normal people, not adjusting his hand placement in accordance to what gear he was going to. After that extreme over-rev, he started shifting like I do and hasn't had a problem since.

It's easier to accidently miss a shift if your hauling through a turn cuz of G's.

Heh, last thing you want to do is shift if you're tight in a turn, or you'll upset the car's balance.

if you can heel toe and rev match correctly you wont upset the cars balance at all.

This is a funny thread that I have actually given much thought to (yes, BEFORE reading this)......BUT not because it is difficult, but because i have a umi short stick cut down an inch w/ a 2" MBA ball that doesn't let me put my hand where I want when I have my middle console in. No porblem when I'm racing (no console), but with the console......aww you know what, ****, I'm gonna snap some pics for this guy tomarrow!!! They are worth 1,000 words.
