Default Problems with a Hurst Shifter

I am new to the f body world, and have a question. I have the transmission being rebuilt and going with a new clutch. The guy I bought the car from had a Hurst Shifter in it (not the Stock one but the short through I think) I like it a lot, but have a concern that I was wondering if it could be fixed. When you bring it over to the left into the 1st/2nd gear area, it will naturally spring back to the neutral position (normal) But when you take it over to the 5th/6th position it remains there, it doesn't come back to the center (not normal) I have the shifter out of the car and am wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and if so how is it fixed? Am i going to have to get a new shifter? And if so, which one should I get?

My Hurst always naturally went into the neutral position.

Try taking off the shifter boot and seeing if there is something stuck. If not it could be something in the transmission.

There's springs on both sides of the shifter to center it(Billet plus and I think on the competition plus also). There's two sets of springs. You can remove one set if it's too stiff for your liking. Maybe it's missing the springs or they took one set out and it's gotten weak.

As above, the 1/2 and 5/6 gate spring loads can be calibrated on a Hurst( both the aftermarket and the factoty units). There are additional spring sets available through Mr Gasket( makers of the Hurst line) that allow you to set the loads you like. You may have a broken spring in the 5/6 plane.

I took the dust boot off, and I can't see any springs. I looked at the whole thing, it looks like a ball pressed into a rectangle plate. When I move it from side to side, It retuns to the middle, but there is less tension in one direction. I just can't get to the springs. I am checking their website for help.

There are 2 metal plates (one either side of the shifter) that you see when the dust boot is off. They are held down by 2 bolts apiece. Remove those and you will see the springs. My shifter was doing the exact same thing and I took it apart, gave it a good cleaning and lubrication as well as some new springs and it was like new. I believe there are 2 springs on the 1-2 side and only 1 on the 5-6 side. I replaced them all, and installed 2 springs on both sides. Works great.

would these springs affect regular shifting at all? Like preventing the shifter from going in a gate at all?
