Default Tranny banging

Hey guys, i have a 5 spd, and it is making a banging sound when i hit bumps.

You can acually hear it smacking off of something.

I replaced the tranny mount, and it lessened the problem, but now it is doing it REALLY bad, i swear, if i hit a piece of sand, it will do it.

Im pretty sure it is the tranny, but im not 100% sure, if im just crusin at a steady speed, and give it gas real fast, you can also hear the bang.

Maby something came loose that we did, i dont know (i will try and check tommorow) but does anyone know what my problem could be, and how to fix it? I am kinda afaraid to drive my car now, i dont want to mess anything up.

Thanks!! and I hope i can get some help

Check your torque arm bushing. I bet you anything it's torn and you can't tell. I had the same problem on my car. Get underneath, grab the torque arm and try to move it. If it moves at all in any way, your mount is shot.

How do i check engine mounts???

I looked at the torque arm, and i really didnt see anything wrong with it... but i can tell you right now, when i hit bumps, or hit the gas really fast, i can hear the noise right next to me where the shifter is.

What exactly do i need to look at on the torque arm??? I tried wiggiling it around, and it didnt budge, and all of the rubber pieces looked fine..

Thanks

I just shuved a piece of hose (left over vacum hoses from other car) between the car and cats or really any part where the exhaust might come into contact with the bottom of the car. Did you "drive" the car after installing the tranny mount or did you baby it alittle, and now drive normal and notice it?

i didnt baby it, i drove normally.

I wasnt sure if the tranny mount would fix the problem, so i drove normal to see if it did, and the first day it only made the clunking sound 2 times, (this was last weekend) now it is making the noise just about every 10 seconds. *when i hit the gas really fast while cruzin, or hit a bump*

When i downshift i can hear it now, and it never did that before the tranny mount.

I was driving and i accidently put it in the wrong gear (well acually i shifted too early when i was slowing down) and the car started bucking and i could hear the noise... every time i heard it, i saw the shifter bouncing up and down too.. if im not mistaking it made the noise when the shifter was going down from the bounce.

Does this sound like anything??

Check the engine mounts. Have someone watch outside the car. Put it in 1st, hold the brake and let the engine try to pull... Do the same thing in reverse. Per GM spec if the engine rocks more than 24mm to the side the mounts are worn or broken. You should be able to climb underneath and see a broken mount. If it turns out ones is broken replace them both.

Double check the torque arm mount, check to make sure the trans and tunnel cross members are tightened down... if what you're hearing is in fact the trans hitting something those are the things that would cause it.

Im pretty sure it is the tranny... i should go get my camera and see if the mounts are bad myself... as a matter of fact, i will do that now.

Im just about positive it is the transmission though, unless somehow the engine mounts are making the tranny bounce around.

Thanks though.

The crossmember is tight, and the tranny is tight on the mount. They were torqued to specs. (well, to ls1 specs anyways)

I vote for torque arm mount deterioration too.Is it really so hard to grab ahold of the torque arm and shake it? Also a bad motor mount CAN cause this = the trans is held( you just replaced the mount) and as the engine torques it rolls to one side and moves the trans into the tunnel.

i tried the test to check the engine mount, and my dad said the engine didnt budge.. should i try it giving gas or what? I just hit the brake, and let the clutch out untill it almost stalled, i did it a few times in both gears, and he said it hardly moved.. if at all.

I tried moving the torque arm around, but it didnt budge,,, i did only have half of the car on jackstands, so maby that was why, or im messing with the wrong thing

I found the problem...

It was the exhaust smacking the crosmember behind the tranny crossmember, i just jammed a piece of wood under the exhaust and the xmember, and the sound went away.

Im going to make a new thread in exhaust, and find out why it is hitting.

Thanks for all of the help though
