Default 96 Firebird SUDDENLY will not shift in 2nd gear HELP!

I went out today, after not starting my car in about a day, and noticed it will not shift into third gear. The engine tachs way too high and still will not shift. I don't want to even try the highway.

Does anyone know if this sounds like major transmission trouble or something small. It seemed lower on Dexron Mercon, though it couldn't have been low for long as I checked it, as I always do, about a week ago.

Thanks, and I appreciate any assistance in this matter.

-Mike

Sounds like something broke inside the trans. Were you grabbing gears or running it really hard recently?? If it can't even get into gear definitely don't drive it, take it to the shop and have them tear it apart and find out whats wrong. Perhaps a bend shift fork or something.
