Is this an option, or is the stronger billet gonna be necessary for that iron disk?

Make SURE the friction surface of the flywheel is surface ground before installing. There is a flyhweel manufacturer out there who installs their inserts without grinding and the disc will NOT seat against this surface.

 

So these aluminum flywheels basically have a steel "insert"?

stick only - which manufacturer are you talking about, and which one would you recommend.

My old Hays aluminum flywheel had a replaceable steel insert, as I would think all of them do.
