slipping on and off
slipping on and off so the other day my clutch starts acting up slipping from the 1-3 shift and 40mph 6th gear shift test. well now it stopped slipping and i was already ready to drop the trans and buy a new clutch. the thing is its done this a few times already. once after racing back in april, and once after that, and now. is the clutch bad? or did i just over heat the disc? i let the car cool down the other day and it stopped. the previous owner had it installed in november 2005, and rarely drove the car until march when i bought it. also, i get a notchy feeling when shifting so i think the clutch/flywheel is the cause of that.
It's not uncommon to see a clutch that's getting ready to go intermittently slip based on the type of usage/load it's getting. Tolerances are tight between flywheel, disc, and pressure plate, so all kinds of factors from thermal expansion, vibration, road slope can contribute to a clutch that's begining to go bad slip a little here and there. Sounds to me like a bad install. Maybe he didn't resurface the flywheel? Or resurfaced beyond tolerances or didn't shim after a resurface? Pressure plate not torqued all the way down, or evenly? You'd have to beat the hell out of clutch to smoke it that fast if it's installed properly.
