T56 problem, 5th gear pops out.
When I go to put it in 5th it feels like it goes in, but when I give it any gas at all it pops out of gear. Is this the synchro or something else?
About how much am I looking at to fix it?

It grinds 3rd and 5th, but not very often. Maybe once a month. But now when I put it in 5th it goes in, but if I give it any gas it pops out.
Will most tranny shops look at my tranny for free? I might go and see what they think.

Does the tranny ever grind, or have you ground 5th gear before? If then, I'd look into it being a synchro. I wouldn't rebuild it (about $750) until you get the other syncs worn out also and it gets too annoying to handle. You can drive a worn synchro tranny for quite a long time if you can bear the grind noises it makes. I raced an entire summer on a grinder LOL! Still powershifted fine
If it just "pops" out for no reason, sometimes it can be the clutch itself. I had a worn out clutch and mine did that before. Then I installed a new clutch and it mysteriously quit popping out of gear. Not sure how to explain that one <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />

If it is popping out of gear then it is normally a bad gear. Either worn dog teeth or glazed cone surface. If it grinds going into gear it is more than likely caused by either a bad synchro or blocker ring.
5th gear is real easy to get to on these trannies. Just pull off the extension housing and it's just below reverse and the VSS tone ring. You just need and set of gear pullers with a long reach.
