swap tranny gears around?
Has anyone ever tried to swap the gears around inside a T56 to change the ratios?
ex:
move 1st set to be 2nd set, 2nd set to be 3rd set, 3rd set to be 4th set, etc.
then have a new 1st set made
having never pulled the T56 apart, I'm thinking it would be nice IF POSSIBLE to get that 4th gear 1:1 set moved to the 5th gear spot and have a new 1st gear set made (no idea what that would cost...just thinking here right now). It would also be nice to be able to play mix/match with the Z06's T56 since it has other ratios.
is this even possible and if not WHY?
ALSO, since the T56 is built on the T5 design, WHAT IF, I got the 3.35 ratio 1st out of the T5 and swapped it in?

Its alot deeper than simply that. Although the T5 and T56 are both Borg Warner designs ,thats about where they stop. So, where you got the idea that you could interchange gears is a mystery to me. There are existing t56 gears that can be combined into unique ratio sets , however there are limitations( solid shafts as you have mentioned is one). What are the actual ratios you are looking for?

I was under the idea that the T56 was a direct derivative of the T5 (a T5 with an extra over drive) so it seemed logical that the parts might swap. My IDEAL setup (when I thought the T5 stuff might swap) was to use the T5's 3.79:1 first and 0.63:1 fifth to get:
Gear 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th R
Ratio 3.97:1 2.97:1 2.07:1 1.43:1 1.00:1 0.63:1 2.90:1
that would have put about 2K drop between every gear, provided a low enough 1st to deal with the high RPM requirements of my engine, and still worked with a 3.73rear in order to slow down the driveshaft (at current I'm running 4.56s to make 6th usable)....
As I understand it, there are only two "T56s". One is the "standard" T56 that came in the F-bodys and C5s. Then there is the M12 (I think that is the code) that came in the Z06s and GTOs. Are there any others out there that I'm not aware of?

Those are current T56s but there was a first -year- only Fcar set
3.36/2.06/1.35/1.0 /.62/.80
There are no 1st ratios deeper than that .
Besides the synchronizers and linkage differences, the center differences( physical gear sizing) make the T56 and T5 parts very different.

The input gear is an LT1style shorter part so you would have to treat the swap much like an LT1 to LS1 swap. Also the face width of the gears are different so extra shimming of the input bearings would be required. The short answer is yes but it requires other changes to use .
