need help ASAP!! clutch install problems

Default need help ASAP!! clutch install problems

So I installed a Spec 3 along with a Spec billet steel flywheel in my 01' Z28 today. The problem is, after I was all finished, I went to crank it over and it began to crank for just a second but then the starter began grindng and the motor stopped turning over. I have no idea what is goin on. Its almost like the starter is not engaging enough with the flywheel to turn the motor over when it hits a compression stroke or something. Is there anyway to adjust the starter or what can I do?? PLEASE HELP!

Try rotating the engine by the crank to make sure it is able to physically turn over. Either the flywheel is wrong, or on backwards maybe?

thanks for the reply. The motor will turn over and the flywheel is definetly not installed wrong. I think maybe I have the wrong flywheel or something...does anybody know if the LT1 flywheel will bolt to an LS1? Maybe I have the wrong part...this sucks...

Don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure LT1 flywheel won't work with LS1 system.

Yeah, thats kind of what I was thinking too. So if we rule out the wrong flywheel, why will the starter not engage it properly? I loosened the starter and moved it about an 1/8th" closer to the flywheel but the problem is the same...

the bendix ( starter drive) may be out. Its the part with the gear on it.

Yeah it could be as simple as your starter plunger and or other starter internals are worn out.

Hey guys, a little update...I had Advance test the starter. They said it was good but that is drawing a few too many amps. I think that the starter is only having problems when under a load (ie. starting the car) but works fine when on their test bench (zero load). Perhaps am internal gear or something is giving up when loaded? So, I ordered a high torque starter from Summit which will be here tomorrow.

In the mean time, I contacted Joe at t56rebuilds.com (as the tranny was rebuilt when the clutch was replaced) and also a Spec technical guy, they both feel it is a starter issue also. I will keep you all posted...
