How important is the moisture guard?

Default How important is the moisture guard?

Like the title says, how important is the black moisture guard that goes in the clutch hydraulic master cylinder?

I changed my clutch about 8 months ago and never put that thing back in.

Could water in the hydraulic fluids cause corrosion in the steel parts of the hydraulic system?
Would it also ruin the hydraulic properties of the DOT4 fluid, making the pedal feel spongy?


And also, when bleeding the system with the slave bleeder screw, can I just let the fluid run back down the stem into the bellhousing?

Brake fluid attracts moisture. Read a can of it and it says to keep the cap on.

I understand that, but do you guys think it will cause a spongy pedal feeling?
and can I let the fluid drip back into the bellhousing when bleeding.

Yes moisture can mess up pedal feel and yes you can let the fluid run down. That black thing keeps moisture out and prevents you from sucking air into the system when the fluid gets low.

Anytime the fluid isn't fresh and pure it is going to feel subpar.

Yes the fluid can just run out the bottom of the bellhousing, there is a slot it runs out of.

And the fact that the slave is no where near the PP, it should be real safe to bleed that way?

Yes it's fine. It's not like it drips onto the friction surfaces.
