I don't know about the trans lubes, but Maxlife in the engine oil fills has some about of synthetic in it.
In the engine form - again, not sure about the trans lube type you have - it's also say a thick 30 weight in the xxW-30 viscosities...so, not sure what cold (vSt @40C) and hot (cSt @ 100C) viscosities the Maxlife you have is.
Most dino ATF's are around 7.5 cSt @ 100C, the Synchromesh's are around 9.0 cSt @ 100C...so if you find a PDS on the stuff you have, check that out and see what the cSt @ 100C rating is.
Also, I think they blend in a little more seal swell additives into the engine Maxlife's oils, since it's for the higher mileage vehicles...that could also be the case for the lube you've chosen here also.

Thats what I've had in my 98's trans for almost 20k now. So far so good and I believe it fixed my rear seal leak. Although, I redid my pro 5.0 gasket at the same time because I thought maybe that could be another possible source of the leak.

Well, at 76K miles I dont think it EVER had it changed before. Looked like engine oil when it came out. So far about 20 miles on the new fluid, seems a hair notchier, other than that, no change. Nice to know it has red fluid in it now

I just went and read the Valvoline Maxlife ATF page, and it indeed looks like it probably has some additional seal swell additives in it, and most likely contains some (probably a low double digit %) of actual synthetic (Group IV and/or V) basestocks.
The PDS on it has the @ 100C cSt at 7.31 and the @ 40C cSt at 36.73, so this should not really be any thicker than a regular Mercon/Dexron III ATF.
As for fixing the rear seal leak, that could be the additional seal swell adds, and as for feeling more notchy, if that was the original dino Dexron III they had in there from the factory, it will have sheared to something less that 7.31 @ 100C...so the new fluid most likely is thicker, but in the manufacturers range.
