Default McLeod Organic/Kevlar clutch installed!!

After having bad luck with stock clutches, I went with a Cartek setup late last year. After 12K miles on it, I decided to pull it out. Just wasn't the right clutch for me(no bashing intended). So, I went by Thunder Racing and picked up a McLeod Organic/Kevlar setup and installed it a couple of weeks ago. So far, I like this clutch better than the Cartek unit (again, no bashing intended). It doesn't chatter at all like my Cartek did (yes, I had the new 6-sprung disk), and its just easier to drive on a day to day, rush hour traffic basis. It basically drives like a stock clutch. For those interested, pedal pressure doesn't seem to be much stiffer than stock. Haven't been able to beat on it yet(only 400 miles on it), but I can tell by driving it everyday for the last two weeks that its going to grab pretty good.

Thanks to Thunder Racing for the clutch, and a big thanks to my bud Jason99T/A for helping me out with the install.

P.S. Jason, hopefully I won't be gaining any more ground on you when it comes to clutch changes on our cars.

Glad it is all working out well Chad! It is about time you got something working well in that car. LOL I was getting used to pulling your tranny out every weekend. It is going to be nice not having your car on the lift anymore.

BTW, you still need 6 more clutches before you catch me. I'm on number 9.

6 more to catch you?? I have had 3 stock clutches (3rd one is still good, but nevertheless, it was installed and uninstalled )1 Cartek, and now the Mcleod. I only need 4 to catch you

Sounds cool. Small piece of advice, don't use synthetic clutch fluid with your master and slave. A few of us have had some issues that appeared after several thousand miles with extremely variable pedal pressure. I switched to the heavier non synthetic fluid and my pedal pressure has returned for the most part. I still think that there was some seal damage in the master, but I'm not sure. I'm going to replace the master and slave when I do the bellhousing in the spring.

Coach - Hey sounds like another good clutch alternative. I have the Cartek and its holding up quite well, can you perhaps elaborate a bit more about why you feel the Cartek wasn't the "right clutch for you." ... I don't mean to get off topic.

I have the older cartech disc design and it can get annoying in traffic..I was thinking of ordering the new six spring disc but now after what you said not so sure.I will probably change out clutch next year and now the mcleod might be the one to get or was maybe going to try the new
star spec stage 3 carbon maybe.I want minimal to zero chatter ,dont' care if pedal pressure is a bit more than stock but it should stand up to
planned 500 to maybe 550 when I add my heads an NOS.Is the mcleod organic kevlar still not up to this..how driveable is the twin disc..just might have to go up to one of those monsters.I do get heavy traffic around my city so manners in heavy slow creeping traffic is important to me..only be drag racing maybe twice a year although will be doing some runs against buddies once in awhile.
I guess its still pretty certain that the zo6 wont survive on the nos very long with 425 or so rwhp?? plus 100 to 125 shot.

MY99TAWS6: If you plan on making that kind of power, I would look into the Mcleod Rev-Lok II clutch. It will hold up better than the Kevlar/Organic will. I have had both clutches and the Rev-Lok is defintely the way to go at those power levels. The Kev/Org is about the best street/strip clutch on the market, but I wouldn't recommend it for those making much over 450rwhp and plan on racing the car frequently.

Default Re: McLeod Organic/Kevlar clutch installed!!

derty- Thanks for the advise. I have DOT 3 non-synthetic fluid in there. I had at one point considered the synthetic, but saw all the posts suggesting not to use it.

Damian- I would need to see pics of the tractor to answer your question. lol

bigSS- I had some "kinks" that I couldn't get worked out of the clutch setup. If you or anyone else would like more details, you can shoot me an email.

Jsears8- Justin, bring it man. lol Umm, Jason..I'm gonna need a cam, headers, 12-bolt, some gears, and some tires in the car soon. Gotta race Justin again. lol

MY99TAWS6- As Jason posted above, that kind of power you will be running will probably be too much for the Organic/Kevlar clutch. I would go with the Rev-Lok II like Jason suggested. I drove Jason's car once with the Rev-Lok and its an off/on type clutch. I didn't notice any chatter, but keep in mind he has those 4.56 gears, lol. I don't know anything about the Twin-disk McLeod clutch, but I will let Jason know you asked him a couple of questions in this post.

My Rev-Lok II just broke a wing off. I talked to George at McLeod and he said it couldve been caused from slipping it thru daily driving(plus I have a real steep driveway). So now I have a single disk organic/kevlar and Ill be picking my car up from the shop in a couple hours.

MY99TAWS6: The Rev-Lok II is not that bad in traffic. It is an off-on type clutch, but it doesn't chatter at all. It does take some time to get used to it, but it is an awesome clutch for what I do with the car.

The twin-disk grabs even harder than the Rev-Lok. If you plan on this clutch, be sure you have a bullet proof drivetrain as you will break rearends, driveshafts, tranmissions, etc. if you race on slicks.

Hey Chad,

Congrats on the new clutch working out for you. As luck would have it I just ordered the same exact one. How difficult was the install on this clutch? Is it fessable that a novice with really good mechanical skills could do this install? I'm tempted to try, but don't want to attack something that is way over my head. I mean I realize you had Jason aroiund to help you, but if he weren't there how difficult would it have been if you only had installuniversity's write up to go by?

Thanks,
Mike

Mike- Clutch installs on these are actually pretty easy. Its always a good idea to have a buddy on hand to help you out though. Easier and safer that way. If Jason wasn't available to help me out, I believe I could have installed without any major issues. Jason being there was a much appreciated benefit. Just make sure you have a good set of sockets and either some LONG extensions or a bunch of extensions. Also will need a swivel extension to get to some of the bolts. You should be able to handle it.

BTW- What other site have I seen you on? The Hideout maybe?

joghotrod- Damn, I knew I was forgetting to thank that old guy. Seriously, thanks for supplying the lift and the tranny jack. It was a huge help. Oh, Thunder is having another Dyno day on Sept. 7th. I'm gonna dyno this time. Wanna go up there? Maybe you might want to see if you can pull a little higher number? Let me know.

Let me when it's time to do the "big" mods to the SS. You know I'll come and help. Think we have time to install the cam/headers by the time dyno day rolls around?

Hey Chad, you hit the nail on the head. I used to go to the hideout all the time. I've already ordered the McLeod so i'm sort of locked, but just out of curiousity what made you go with that clutch. What do you like/dislike about it over the last two clutches you've had? If you don't feel at liberty to say on the board, could you possibly e-mail me? buschman_007@hotmail.com thanks bro. you've put my mind at ease. can you share some insite on the shims? I know nothing about them and which ones to use? Did you go ahead and replace the master cylinder? How difficult was that? Is there anything I might need that doesn't come in the kit? like maybe clutch fluid or something?

Again, your helps is very appreciated.
Mike
