Default Reverse synchronizer retaining ring?

Am I supposed to shove this around the synchro or does it just sit between the 5-6 cluster and synchro. The last one broke and ended up breaking my 5/6 cluster.

I'm a little fuzzy on the details of the reverse synchro, could you post a pic of what you're talking about?

The retainer's tabs should press against the reverse slider keys. It should be forced in. Which spacer are you specifically talking about? Most of the time, they look like either thin or fat washers. The the Thrust washer looks like a washer with grooves or teeth cut on the inside to mate with the spline of the main shaft and teeth on the outside edge to mate with the synchro.

Im talking about the spacer that goes on the 5th/6th synchro, is it a thin black plastic spacer?

Can you take a picture? There is a thin spacer that is used on the 5-6 assembly but it's a small steel ring.

edit: actually I think I know what you're talking about. Yes there is a small thin plastic washer that goes on the top of reverse.

Well, I put the 5-6 cluster back on and shift forks and all kinds of ****.. now I think I put the reverse synchro in where the 5/6 is supposed to be. I had everything seperated and I thought that the synchro with the plastic washer thing was the reverse, but when I started to go back and put it together the manual says there was a spacer on the 5/6 synchro and I dont have anything else that looks like it could be a spacer. So I put the synchro with the plastic washer (what I thought was a spacer) in for the 5/6.

Doesn't sound right, I can't believe it would even fit. The 5-6 goes on the mainshaft, then the reverse synchro with the retainer clip up against the 5/6 gear cluster, plastic washer on top of that. There is a spacer on the 5/6 synchro but it is a SMALL thin metal ring, in fact if you glance at it wrong it will stick to the 6th gear bearing and you will miss that it's even there.
This picture from the LS2.com rebuild shows the plastic washer you are refering to being on top of the reverse Synchro.

Ok, I see it now. Well then I guess the spacer for 5/6 must be on the bearing still.

Maybe Im having a hard time getting the retaining clip in because Im trying to put it on the 5/6 synchro instead of reverse, but the two look identical to me.

I would check just to make sure that spacer is there, it's about the thickness of a dime, and about 1/16 of an inch thicker than the counter shaft. As far as the reverse synchro, the tabs of the retainer press into where the slider keys go. Sending you a PM. I've used a screw driver to force the tabs against the keys, just be careful not to bend them too much.
