Default pulled the clutch and found.....

oil on the clutch disk.couldnt find oil coming from anywhere.there was oil on the back of the flywheel bolts thou.

a few months ago i put a used ram vds clutch inn.i bought a new clutch disk, shimmed the slave and had the flywheel turned.everything was fine for 2-3 months then it started slipping.i was told to pull them shim from the slave and run 2 shims on the bolts.

im thinking the rear main seal is leaking when its under pressure.anybody have this problem?

sound like im on the right path?

Yeah it very well be the rear main seal or could be a top end leak that is dripping downward. Look around for an oil leak first.

no sign of a leak anywhere.just oil on the disk and a buildup around the balehousing.

When you first installed the clutch did you apply blue loctite to the threads on the flywheel bolts?

If you didn't then that's more than likely the cause.

I had the same thing happen once and also thought it was the rear main. When I removed the flywheel bolts the threads were covered in oil.

I hope this helps.

Yes loctite will seal the threads.

Last time I checked a rear main seal was ~ $15.00 so it's not like it's big $$$

When you removed the flywheel bolts were the threads covered in oil?

If so then you just need to use blue loctite when replacing the clutch.

Make sure you clean the bolts off with brake cleaner first before applying loctitie. I would also use the red loctite instead of that blue crap. Red is the stronger of the 2 and those flywheel bolts do take some torque through them.

If its not the seal, or bolts (i suspect it is), then look at the plug in the tranny itself, a friend's car had it loose and leaked from there, we thought it wasnt the slave

FYI: I bought a Felpro rear main seal kit for my LT1 and the paper work said that the crank may have been drilled to far by GM causing oil to leak. They recommended doing the above suggestion and NOT replacing the seal if you see oil on the threads.

If you haven't already found the cause of your oil leak check the plug in the end of the crank. It looks like a freeze plug and can be damaged or pushed too far into the crank durring the removal or installation of a new pilot bearing.
