M6 guru's, is double-clutching required with big(bigger) downshifts?

Default M6 guru's, is double-clutching required with big(bigger) downshifts?

I always rev-match now on my WOT downshifts but do I actually need to double-clutch on the(3 to 1, 4 to 2, 5 to 3, 5 to 2, etc...) downshifts? I haven't yet and the car always seems to be smooth(not jerky) when I match revs appropriately to engine speed/gearing. The reason I'm asking is because so many people say this NEEDS to be done to better protect your transmission and there are several others who claim this is NOT necessary on newer cars like these. Very confusing to say the least.

So whats the deal?

It is not suppose to be necessary, but I do it anyways. Less wear on the synchros and I like how it falls right into gear nice and smooth.

I got interupted at work while writing this reply.

Allow me finish. Its a good idea to baby these trans whenever possible and save the abuse for racing. For example, never use third gear unless racing. It appears to be the weak point in most trans. Since these trans are close ratio and these engines make good hp and torque its not necessary to use it during regular driving.

I heel and toe every downshift because otherwise it feels like im hurtin the trans. Its ridiculous. When I drive the ford escort it feels fine to downshift normally but in the camaro if I dont match the rpms it feels like Im hurting the tranny. Its not right.

In the morning when its cold I can barely get a foward gear. Its ugly. The car limps to work for the first five miles before it can be shifted normally. Once it gets warmed up it starts to shift a lot better but not perfect.

The price to pay for a M6

Thanks Dug. Interesting information. I'll make a point of it to start double-clutching ASAP. But not using 3rd gear during normal driving? I've never heard that one before. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />

Hey Mike

Third is the least usefull gear on a stock car. 2nd will take you up to 75 which is fast enough in most cases. 4th is good for 20 and up. So unless you are racing there is no reason to use 3rd gear.

Typically, I shift from 1st to fouth in regular driving. Sometimes 1st to 5th. If I want quick acceleration, I will use 2nd and second covers all legal speeds. I will go for weeks without using 3rd.

Before I race for a week or two, I practice shifting third to make sure I dont miss the shift.

I forgot exactly what the question is but I think its about minimizing wear on the trans. You need to find the rhthym of the trans. If you shift at its rhythm the shifter falls into gear effortlessly. THat is what its all about. Not forcing the trans. If one gear dont work, try the others.

Try and visualize where the input shaft's speed is with respect to the trans. Is it too high or to low? And try and fix accordingly.

It does its job of bypassing the synchros. When I first bought my car (used) after a few days I couldnt't get it into 5th from 6th (synchro was shot). I learned to double clutch and it went in fine. Got the synchro repaired, but now I still double clutch ever since. It's a good technique to learn.
