I always park with 1st gear in- except when I park downhill I put in reverse to park. It don't hurt anything.

Nope, I think everybody does that with a manual, I would never trust only 1. I always do both.

I always put mine in gear and have the ebrake engaged. Safety thing incase the e-brake doesn't engage on a hill

^ It does. You'd probably be fine just leaving it in gear and not putting the brake up, but better safe than sorry lol

Anyone know why GM recommends reverse specifically? I always put mine in 1st and use the parking break. Has anyone else had problems with their parking break popping up when trying to engage it? It only does it sometimes. You can hear a kind of loud spring pop. It's done that since I bought it brand new in 2000. When it pops, it'll get real loose and I'll have to put it all the way back down and then lift up again.

I dont hear anything on ours, but it gets really easy to pull, and doesnt hold the car. Just like you said, down and up again, and its fine.

As for using reverse, i would assume since it is the lowest gear?

Even if you adjust your rear brakes you would be stupid not to put the car in gear IMO
1st gear facing uphill, reverse facing downhill, it just makes sense

My brake grabs hard.

Unfortunatly, I only use the brake when I park. I never put it in gear.

Bad habit - I know I need to quit

I've always used both on every standard car I've driven. I wanted to get a remote start but I've had the habbit of putting it in gear for 7 years and I know I'll wind up smacking into something.
