Default T56 Trashed!

I ran over a piece of metal or something in road today which smashed the tailhousing back by the driveshaft! Bummer!

I was able to drive about 5 miles to get home. Other than oil all over place it drove fine. Now the question.

Can I buy just the tail housing? Maybe I should just buy a rebuildable core and pull parts off of that?

Would any t56 93-2002 fit? I have a '97 TA. Am I kidding myslf? Will I need a new trans?

Thanks, I just looked again. The main case also has a big chunk missing. I guess I will need a replacement. Looking now.

i looked up case parts the other day at the delership i work at. the tailshaft housing for the LT1 trans is discontinued from GM and the case was over $600 with my cost being 10% over dealer cost.

A GM dealer is a poor place( the poorest) to buy transmission parts( actually any parts). You can certainly do better through a Tremec dealer. If you trans is otherwise healthy you can get any Fcar core for the case and extension as all are the same. The LT1 and LS1 models are common for these parts.

If sixspeedsinc.com can't help you out, you can also try Rockland Standard Gear. they'll usually want the number off the tag on the trans to be sure about the parts.

Thanks for all the help. I like the core idea. Maybe I can find a core good enough to use as is! I suppose I might as well throw in a new LT4 PP, disc and flywheel while I am in there.

Go to www.t56rebuilds.com and call them up. They sell the main case for $200, sandblasted. Not sure about tailhousing, I am sure they can get one for you at a great price.
