I agree that there is too much misinformed clutch manufacturer bashing and I appreciate your thoughtful post. But I don’t believe many clutch failures are caused by “riding the clutch”. I’ve never known anyone who treated a clutch in any way similar to the poor practice of riding the brakes. I certainly never have. But I have destroyed clutches. Drag racing is extreme clutch brutality. I don’t pretend to know why exactly some clutches survive and others fail, but I strongly believe that most failures reported here are related to the especially severe conditions imposed by hard launches.

I also have a lot of sympathy for those who are frustrated and angry after spending $750 or $1000 or more on a clutch and having it fail within a few months.

shoot....these days $700 is getting off easy for a clutch and flywheel.Mcleod....$1500 no flywheel....exedy....$1400 no flywheel....text...$1100 no flywheel.people have stated in their threads that they have stop and go traffic and floor it near idle in high gear and stupid stuff like that.some have posted riding it too.im sure not alot of these issues are a combo of problems, but repeatedly riding a clutch will cause issues.

I hope everybody on this site reads this post before buying a clutch

Today we got 3 clutch problem calls and they were 3 different brand clutches. I had to explain (again) the purpose of the clutch.

On my personal cars I'm very happy to get 4k miles out of a clutch due the abuse I give them at the track. Not afraid of 6500rpm launches and slipping them the whole 60' But most people think the clutch can take that while living 100k miles due to the fact it's a stronger clutch.

If there was one clutch that did it all they would sell a million of them. Fact is that a clutch is a wear item and a race/high hp clutch is not made to last as long as a stocker (in a stock vehicle). It is made to handle the power/abuse for shorter periods of time.

Slowhawk - How many track passes do you expect from a clutch?

I know I ride my stock clutch, 38k miles on it. When I ride my clutch is under 20 mph when cruising around. I do thsi cause in 1st-3rd under 1500 rpms and under 20-25 mph I have a nasty huckle bucking that the car gets into if I dont keep the clutch pressed in some. This either goes away or is not noticeable in 4th-6th at similar rpms and I dont notice it as much in 4th at those speeds though it does want to stall on me at times or I hear alot of noise from the rear.

Any ideas what is causing this? An installer told me it was my clutch going bad, but its been doing this a year. It did this after getting all my work done to it, and prior to the work it never did this. Chuckles.

Kudos to ppl who get their money and dont stand behind their work or take pride in it

Depends on which car and the power level/gear setup. I've got as many as 40 passes and as little as 4 (stock clutch/stock car -but did 12.2 in a fairly stock C5 Vette )
My FI Vette did 24 passes with stupid abuse on a SPEC 3I.That was an awesome track clutch with Nitto's.

Same with my Spec stg4, I didnt know anything about torque sequence or even what torque I just put it together like I did all the old junk Ive thrown together for years, no break-in, just drove a few miles and said yup works great and then 6 grand side steps at the track. 2 years and 10,000 miles later its still NOT smokin'

Wow! – Now that is discouraging. I thought my similar experience was unusual. I got thirty passes before toasting my stock clutch but that was with poor traction and 2-second sixtys. My Ram HD died after 55 passes with better traction and 1.6-second sixtys. No wonder so many M6ers switch to autos.

Does it strike you as odd that 99% of the threads about slipping clutches are from spec stage 3's bought in the last 12 months? Just curious.

I had over 50 passes on my OZ700, about 5500 miles, and many of the passes were in the 10's, at 140+

When I removed it, I'd say it was just fully broke in.

Although I am not abusive on the clutch in any way.

Thanks for the info but why did you remove it?

I removed it, as I was upgrading my T56...

As for the clutch.. I admit I got caught up in a lot of the BS hype, and got it into my head, I needed ( wanted ) a "better" clutch.
So I bought an ExoSkel..

With hindsight, no I didnt need it. But then again, neither do about 80% of the people who buy it...

It wasnt an easy decision to make, as the OZ700 performed faultlessly, and drove like stock.
I knew I was going to lose this when I went to the Exo, but for some reason, I just wanted one anyway.

StevieT – I understand completely. We want the Exoskel because we love beauty. You’ve convinced me to settle for the plain-Jane OZ700. Thanks.

its nice to actually see some people in recent threads admit that part of their clutch problems might actually be due to the driver.
