General opinion is if your running a pre 01 to run regular old atf. 01+ like your car sythetics or ok but some still don't believe that it is. In 01 they changed the sycro from paper to carbon(I believe) basically synthetics will eat away at the pre 01 paper ones and don't on the 01+ or so many say.

The theory on synthetics killing them is that they tend to "swell" (and also possibly deteriorate if the oil blend is caustic enough) when exposed to synthetics, to the point of not being able to engage the next gear. Whether this is due to some synthetics having a high % ester base stock content (Red Line D4 being one of the higher ones for this), which attracts water that in turn causes the "swelling", or if it is something else, is still out to jury.
