Stage 3 Install... Bang... help?
Finished installing spec stage three and when taking off from a stop there is a loud banging from right under the shifter. I have headers and true duals so I am familiar with the exhaust bang but this is different and more in the center of the car. All other gears shift fine.

thats is difficult to diagnose...
if the car shifts, drives fine and you clutch pedal feels fine then I would say its something external...
crossmember bolt,
trans mount
etc...

shifts completely fine. Clutch pedal feels fine. If i take off with a little higher rpm, the shake/bang directly under the shifter comes later. if i keep the rpms low, it is right away.
I do not feel that the clutch is put in incorrectly because with higher rpms, i start to move with no shake/bang, and then after i almost completely release the pedal, it shakes a bit.
Hope that helps

The install took me awhile. I have a busy work schedule and ran into some first timer problems, is it possible that while it waited to be completed (two weeks) without the transmission on, that my motor mounts wore out completely??? I also read in a post that when a guy did a clutch swap his transmission mount became mush??? Thanks for the posts

also... when i pull it up in the ramps to re-check it out... it never makes the banging noise. i just work the clutch slowly up the whole time, never releasing it... and the noise doesnt occur.

only four things could be loose on the inside..
pressure plate
friction plate - but only because the pressure plate is not tight
flywheel if you installed a new one
slave cylinder..
now with that being said, the only way the friction plate could be loose is if the pressure plate started to back off the flywheel. When the pressure lifts off the flywheel from screws backing out, you clutch will feel like its not working because it will not be disengaging properly. Also if anything inside is loose from the bolts backing out you will hear the bolts flying around the bellhousing. It will sound like metal popcorn, so to say.
so based off of that... i would definitely recheck the trans-mount and cross-member. You may have a busted/worn out trans-mount. Which would be why it only make the noise under load.
when you installed the clutch...
did you cross torque the pressure plate bolt? use locktite and torque the bolts down evenly?
if anything was wrong internally you would feel it, in the pedal...
i have had pressure plate bolts back out on me, and my pedal disengagement was at the floor and did not shift because the slave could not put equal pressure on all of the pressure plate fingers..

I feel nothing in the pedal at all when the shaking occurs. all bolts were cross torqued with a torque wrench.
how can i tell if the trans mount is busted??

my vote is still the trans-mount... check that... when that mount is busted the transmission will shake/vibrate alot and make loud banging noises...
a couple ways to check it...
jackup the car and remove the crossmember, with the crossmember loose it will stretch the transmount, then you can see if its ripped/worn out.
another way is jack up the car and while under-neath use another jack or with your own stretch push the transmission upward and again watch for a ripped or worn out trans-mount.
some rip and stay one piece, some rip into two pieces...
there are other ways to check it. I just feel those are the fastest.
mine went to **** at about 40,xxx miles. so I replaced it with the Energy Suspension trans mount and it worked great and still is. Some people complain that the trans vibrates to much with the E.S. mount.. I have no problems.

ibanez7... jacked up the car today and took a look at the trans mount. There is a hole in it between where it bolts to the tranny and where the 18mm bolt goes to the crossmember. it looks like the hole/tear is supposed to be there, but what do you say?

i know this is not exactly what the factory trans-mount looks like...
however usually when i trans-mount craps out it rips all the way across or halfway across separating the piece in too. Like the black like i drew on.. this is the most typical they pull apart.
the only thing you should see in a healthy trans-mount is the mounting through holes. Anything extra, like tears/rips means it is time for a new one.
