Default Spec clutch problems

I recently bought a spec stage 3+ clutch and aluminum flywheel. I had a car Dealership put this setup in my 04' GTO. They called spec and asked them how to put the setup in the car correctly. Spec told them to follow the factory torque specs with red locktite. So that is what they did. 1500 miles later it came apart. The flywheel bolts backed out and tore itself up and caused damage to the disc and throughout bearing. Now all spec had to tell me was that it is the dealers fault and they didn't put it in right. I talked with the dealer and was there for some of the install and know that they put it in how they were told. So I called spec and asked them for a torque spec on their bolt and they said they didn't have one to use the factory spec. I is kind of wierd to me that being engineered products that they wouldn't know the torque spec of their own bolts. I am working with them on a new setup now and am having second thoughts on wether i can trust their products again. Is there anyone that puts the aluminum flywheels in everyday and can tell me what went wrong? and has anyone else had problems with these flywheels? Im thinking of going with someone else like fidanza or exedy if i can't get some footing on their reliability.

sounds like an install issue if the bolts backed out, i would try to get proof they backed out n caused the problem, then take it up to the dealer and rase hell until they do something about it. I would think that if it had been specs fault the bolts would have just broken or something would have came apart on the pressure plate or disk. Im no guru or anything but just my thoughts

I can't see how a defective clutch would cause the bolts to free themselves if it was properly installed. What was GM's explanation for why the bolts came loose?

BTW i just ordered my spec 3+ so i hope it was an install problem.

+1 for an install issue. It's not the fault of the manufacturer that bolts backed out. Also... if the were indeed tightened properly to 74 ft lbs with red locktight, there would have NEVER backed out.

Spec is not gonna be very helpfull, regaurdless of whos fault it was. Stay away from them, there are tons of better clutches out there.

^^^ Here we go again with the famous SPEC is junk issue. Of course Spec won't be willing to replace it at THEIR cost if it was an install problem. Enough ranting... to OP I would raise hell at the dealership... if they were indeed torqued correctly and locktite was used there should be almost no way for them to back out.

Default Torque Specs...

Rev, We do not require any spec other than the stock/OE torque specs for the install of this unit. This is the info that was provided to your dealer and the same info provided to you over the phone. That being said, how could we be held responsible for an issue that is clearly install related.

I have no problem helping you by offering replacement parts at a reduced cost...not because your issue was a fault of the product but because you are a customer...and we like to help our customers. You seem to be stuck in the middle here, and for that I am sorry, but let's make sure the "finger of blame" is pointing in the right direction. You are welcome to contact me directly with any questions you may have. I can be reached at 800-828-4379 x. 109. Thanks!
