Default Tranny grinds shifting to 5th gear WHEN COLD. What gives?

Since we've been getting colder weather my M6 has starting grinding when I try to shift to 5th. If I drive the car for 10-15 minutes then it will shift fine. I'm assuming the transmission just warms up. So my question is, why can I not shift into 5th, without grinding, when it's cold?

My LT1 T56 used to do that a little bit going into 2nd. I figured it was just worn syncros being that the trans had 110k+ on it.

Don't mean to hijack, but if I shift to fifth, keep the clutch engaged and put it back in fourth, it grinds like a sumbitch and makes me go back to fifth. Only 66xxx miles too.

Mine grinds fourth EVERY single time for the first shift of the day and sometimes two or three. After a few minutes warm up its fine. Not that it takes much warmth its mighty cold up here. Toasted syncros my guess

I think that's what I'm leaning towards too. I changed the slave cylinder fluid, because it looked like oil, and this weekend I'm going to change the tranny fluid just to see if that helps.

well I changed the tranny fluid this past weekend and it still grinds. It does seem to shift smoother though. I'm assuming synchros going bad?

I've seen several cases where cold weather effects the shifting issues or clutch issues with standard transmissions . I would start with a fluid change and bleeding the clutch . If that does not fix it , you will probably need the transmission looked at or replace the slave cylinder depending on what the issue is .

try changin the tranny fluid. if a lot of you are having teh same problem, it might be the factory gear oil.

39k miles, Original gear oil. A lil notchy in 3rd and 5th when really cold as soon as the car goes about a few miles down the road its fine. I short shift anyways so i dont ever really see 3rd and 5th but I have noticed a diff.

No I don't hear any noises out of the ordinary.

I have changed the fluids.

I guess it's time to take it somewhere and get it looked at.
