If your worried about going into a honda car dealership to get fluid try a motorcycle shop. We carry Honda's full line of fluids at our shop. They make some of the best fluids around tbh. When a bike/atv comes in for service it gets Honda GN4 oil put back in it. Hell, our shop truck (98GMC sierra 5.3l) has GN4 in it and is going on 160k miles. I wouldn't doubt the tranny fluid is superb.

If you're going to run synthetic, Mobil 1 is the way to go.

Btw... hi Tony!

No ****... I was wondering when you guys were gonna join. You did the T56 in my SS, and the T56 in my C5. I have mobil 1 in the C5 and its notchy as hell, I think I'm gonna go put some Honda stuff in it. I had the Honda ATF Z1 in my 95 Z28 and I absolutely loved it.

Yeah we put GN4 in all 4 brands (Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki). The motorcycle HP Trans oil (SAE 85w90 I believe) is god mode in a dirtbike. Lots of people have it switched in on the first service instead of GN4. If the automotive version is anything like the motorcylce stuff performance wise, I would run it.

I'm going to give Honda ATF a shot for my next fluid change, Mobil 1 is still a bit notchy in my books, then again after driving a c6, everything feels damn notchy.

I work at a GM dealer and The Honda parts dept down the road regularly buys cases of Synchromesh from us.
They say they use it in manual transmissions that are hard shifting and it fixes them right up. For this reason I would say the honda fluid isn't as good.

I tried Honda ATF and it felt like the shifter was just dragging through the transmission. It felt fine until about 2,000 miles were put on it. I switched to GM Dextron 6 and it is soooo much smoother now.

Just want to let everybody know that i just switched to Mobil 1 ATF and it has eliminated the cold weather 'grind' i've been having. It shifts a lot smoother in my opinion and no it's not in my head, my transmission shifted real clunky before. I will be staying with this fluid for good.

I mixed 2 quarts Mobil 1 and 2 quarts Pennzoil Synchromesh and it shifts much smoother than the Dex 3 Valvoline Durablend I had in it previously.

I've got some Penzoil Dex/Merc ATF I want to use in 2002 T56. On bottle it says it replaces "most" Dextron 1 through 3. And specifically states Dex3 (H)

Is it ok for '02 T56? Does anyone else use it.

PS it's not Penzoil synchro stuff.

Thanks!!!

You probably should have made up a new post rather than resurrect this 8 yr old one.

The Pennzoil Dex/Merc is fine for any '98-'02 F body T56. I used the Valvoline Dex/Merc for the past couple of years...and am now using GM's current recommended fluid for manual transmissions (their way of saying a repackaged Dex III). Considering you have a later T56 trans w/o paper-lined blockers, you could also use M1 ATF, Red Line D4 ATF, Amsoil ATF, or Pennzoil synchromesh w/o any concern. The Pennzoil synchromesh is a slightly higher viscosity than the ATF's and has a better additive package to reduce gear wear. With that extra viscosity will come some extra notchiness at lower ambient temps. The add packs in M1, RL, Amsoil, and Honda are better than your typical conventional ATF's.
