Default Help me seek some truth...

Two points.
1. Aftermarket shifters. I just read in high performance pontiac that after market shifters are recommended because they have stops, these stops prevent the bending of shift forks. Now, from the T56 manufacturer, the transmission has them built in - Click here . So what is the benifit of an aftermarket shifter?

2. Fluid change. I have read here that some change the manual fluid once a year. I come from the old school thought that you dont do this for reasons I dont care to type in right now. The T56 manufacturer suggests refering to the owners manual on this subject, my owners manual says absolutly nothing about changing the fluid at any interval. So whats the real deal on this subject? Common sense says to change the fluid due to the fact there is no filter, but there is no suggestion to do so.

Any thoughts on these?

aftermarket shifters are more precise than the sloppy factory one. They also do not have the rubber noise/vibration isolator pad on the handle, which makes them feel more precise. They also have shorter shifter arms, which means less travel distance between gears.

Personally, I don't use the adjustable stops, I just back them all the way off. They really can't "save" your tranny, and they can get to be a pain in the *** sometimes.

I never change tranny fluid either. Seems like the metal particles in the old fluid allow the synchros to work smoother. If it isn't broken, don't fix it!

Tony and I are 180 degrees different in opinion on this one. All transmissions have internal stops, that is why the shifter eventually "lands" in a gear....otherwise it would keep going. Many bent shift forks and broken synchro keys could be helped by not being able to "stand" on the shift lever. Once the car is in gear, you don't need amy more force, that just wears parts and brakes stuff. The shift stops work great (if set properly). As for fluid, see the bottom of the other post I listed. There is a link to a company that did ome gear lube testing and the results.....I'd change my oil (and I do...).

Just my thoughts.
