Default To Short Stick or Not

Should I get a short stick? I've not driven a car with one so I'm not sure how they feel. I know there are several different people making them on the side plus the Lou Short Stick. Give me some advise! I currently have the Pro 5.0 w/ the standard shifter. Thanks

I know Lou and his short stick was my first mod. I love it. I love the short throws with it compared to the stick on the Hurst.

They are awesome. One of the best mods. Instead of spending $150+ for a B&M or a Pro 5.0, spend $39 for the Qwik Stick.

I like having a short stick, but I wouldn't buy it....I made mine...

process:

- take your 5.0 shifter and remove the shift ****
- put some paint on the upper most thread and then put the **** back on
- as the **** threads down, it will "carry" the paint with it, thus marking how many threads are actually used by the ****
- once the **** has bottomed out, take it back off and count how many threads were actually "used" by **** (how many have paint on them)
- count up from the bottom thread how ever many the **** used and then add two to that
- mark that point and cut all the threads above that off and debur the end with a file (so the **** will thread back on)

and there you have it....and short throw shifter at no cost (besides time)....mine has a throw of something like 3" total on the 3/4 shift....its fast...

My Factory Hurst + LSS makes my friend's ripper feel like a long sloppy shift.

I cut most of the threads off on mine (Pro 5.0 stick) makeing it the same length as the short sticks. I find it is harder to shift quick now. I can feel the shifter stop at the synchros and then slide in. With the stock shifter, I could jam it on in anyway. I am getting a virgin Pro 5.0 stick and not cuting it. However, it is pretty much up to you and what you like/want.

I made mine from a piece of 5/8 dia stainless barstock I got cheap from a surplus store. Used a lathe to turn down the end a little, then a die to cut new threads, and drilled two holes for the Hurst shifter in the other end with a drill press.

Just out of curiosity how long did you leave the barstock, Im thinking about doing the same thing since I work at a commerical hardware store and pretty much have access to everything you used

I'll measure it tonight and let you know. I could probably get the thread size for you as well. All I remember right now is that it was a metric size. I think the whole project cost me less than $5 so I couldn't see $50 for a LSS. Plus, the stainless steel will never rust . . .

One advantage the lou's has vs others is the bend. It is very short so you loose some leverage.

i got a short stick off ebay from a guy named jarrod i think. A lot of people over at ls1 also got one from him and we are all happy. He sells them for $25 shipped, or at least he did, i think he is still making them.

I bought the Pro 5.0/lou's short stick combo from www.afterthoughtsauto.com. The short stick is great and with the pro 5.0 its nearly impossible to miss the 2nd to 3rd shift. Then I got the flameball **** shifter for the top. It looks great when its lit up at night.

I used to screw up the 2nd to 3rd all the time with the factory hurst stick. Lou's cured the problem. I love it.
