Default T56 Tools

Anyone have a recommendation on a puller for 5th/6th as well as the reluctor ring? I have a gear puller but the only "jaws" I have that'll grasp 5th/6th is a small bearing separator and I don't think that'll clear b/c of the main & counter shafts being so close together.

Also, the installer tool for 5th/6th driven gear. Anyone have an older Helms (1994?) that would list this tool PN, as well as the other tool? I think I can get the job done w/ these two.

thanks
Matthew

Well, I had enough to do the job, & that's what matters.

I am a DIY'er and going to build a pretty strong setup. GMHTP had an article on a shop that did T-56 rebuilds and mentioned having to have special "expensive" tools to pull off the 5/6 gears.

What tools did you use?

What references?

What parts did you replace/upgrade?

Thanks for any info!

GOOD snap ring pliers. I have a $4 set which I ground down to do small rings, a spreader set which have flat jaws, and another good set which do snap rings.

A monstrous OTC gear puller with 15.75"(?) of reach. reluctor and 5th/6th are not on there that tight, but need some help. You need about 13.5" to get 5/6 off.

Large bearing separator & press.

Tremec rebuild guide.

Put in carbon/kevlar(?) friction cones and blocker rings, and iron(steel?) 3/4 fork. Replaced fork pads. The keys for 1-2 synchro were demolished on the 2 side so 2nd speed gear and the 1-2 synchro were replaced. Everything else was pretty nice shape. In all honesty the blocker rings and friction cones were in nice shape, but the new ones took up a little slack so I'm glad they're in there new.

The only bearing that <ahem> needed replacing was the front bearing on the mainshaft. Let's just say that I injured it putting 3rd on <img border="0" alt="[cry]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cry.gif" /> -it's a Timken 12749 I believe. Thank goodness parts plus had one in stock <img border="0" title="" alt="[Embarrassed]" src="gr_emb.gif" />

I really like the design better than the T5; they share a few design ideas, but the T56 just makes more sense.
