Default Strange noise coming from trans under decel, any ideas?

Under deceleration, in every gear except 4th gear, my trans makes a noise like if you were to put an automatic car into park. It's a fast rattle/ratchet sound and you can feel the vibrations from it through the shifter. I called T-56 rebuilds and they've never heard of such a noise either, so I'm hoping someone on here has experienced the same noise and can give me an idea of what it could be. I'm pretty sure I need a rebuild regardless, but it could mean the difference between a $1200 rebuild and a $2000 rebuild. With my budget that's a HUGE difference. Any input would be appreciated!

Does your shifter have adjustable stops?

Yeah, I have a Hurst billet plus. I don't think its the shifter stops being out of adjustment, though. I can shift it like butter at full throttle too, which makes no sense... if it was screwed up that bad, wouldn't it NOT shift smoothly?
