T56 Rebuild "how to" write up
#181
Is your GTO T56 OEM, or was it a converted CTSv T56? The metal spacer looks like the upgraded synchro retainer that may have been used as a spacer on the CTSv 1st gear.
Are there any lettering on the rubber piece? It appears to be somewhat like a CTSv T56 rear seal
(You probably should have opened a new thread of your own for this. I apparently skipped over this old thread for over a week )

Ok I have a question and it's probably stupid. How in the hell do you remove the #13 snap ring without removing the bearing. I'm to the point where I'm trying to remove the 3-4 synchro. I'm not sure if I'm missing something here or if I'm just an idiot but my snap ring pliers won't open it enough to clear the bearing. I'm sure I'm smurfing up somewhere I'm just pretty pissed and can't think straight right now. I'd really appreciate any help!

this is a good write up can we get the missing pictures fixed or replaced? I know the ones way in beginning are old but there is many youngsters like myself that now have LSx drift cars and the weakest points for us is the t56. many cant afford 6k GSR transmissions or even the cheeper used jericos so I see this whole write up being a huge help for us. thanks so much for doing all of this 85MikeTPI. I have been so stuck as what to do as I look for my next t56 to kill. after seeing this thread I just ordered a t56 shop manual, and will be fixing them for now on. so a big thanks

I damaged my t56 magnum. I have it partially disassembled.I cannot figure out how the countershaft comes out. It is one peice. The manual only show the standard t56 which has a 3 peice cs. I need to get the input shaft out. My 3/4 synchro is in a million peices. Thanks

The input shaft will be the last part you take out with a dis-assembly. The case is removed just before the cluster and mainshaft assem removed. The best position for the box is with the input down (through a hole in the table). You lift the case off the gearing.

Which brings me to my next stupid question. I'm trying to disassemble the main shaft. The instructions say:
It would be pretty hard to get the snap ring over that small tapered bearing in front of 3/4 and even if I could I don't see how all the other parts behind the snap ring would fit over the bearing. What am I missing?
From here the mainshaft must be take apart from both ends, a divider can be seen after removal of the 3rd gear.
Flip the mainshaft upside down on the stubby end, (right side of pic below)
-leave the bearing on unless you're replacing it.

Thanks. Not sure why the writeup says not to remove it unless you're replacing it. There is no way around removing it, and without that bearing split plate, you have to sacrifice the bearing by pulling the cage and bearings off with the selector cog and then heat up the bearing race and tap it off with a drift.
