Default Strange Noise

So when my car is in neutral...sound disappears. A friend told me (since I just installed a short stick) that a bolt has probably come loose. When I checked, there didn't appear to be any of that going on. Anyway, when I put the car into gear, there is a faint grinding sound mixed with a hum. It happens every time I run through the gears. I haven't taken a wrench to the bolts in the new short stick (and the noise appeared right about the time I installed it, making this the obvious problem), but does anyone else have any ideas about what this could be? My car only has 23,000 miles on it...I have an aftermarket shifter and that's it...other than intake mods. Other ideas?

I remember when my car was quiet enough to hear the syncros just after installing my ripper ... it seems like so long ago now!

As long as the tranny feels fine, you're probably just hearing the results of a shifter with less sound absorbing characteristics ... try using an aluminum shift *** too... it feels cool!

If you removed the shifter itself to get at the bolts, then double check your RTV seal ... the tranny seems to be 'noisier' with any shifter change.

I actually replaced the shifter a long time ago...it was all good until I replaced the shaft with a short stick. But I'm worried that the short stick may not be the main problem. It's a really disheartening grindy whine type of sound. The grind does NOT sound good. I am going to try and tighten the bolts but it doesn't feel like the upper shaft is the source...

Does it make the noise all the time, or just when you shift?

When you're back in there, tightening the bolts, make sure the stick isn't resting up against the ridge around the top of the base of the shifter...or preventing it from makeing a complete throw in any way.

If that isn't the case, the bolts are tight, and that stick doesn't absorb less sound ... then I don't see any reason that stick would cause a problem and it just happens to be coincidence. Maybe you thrashed the tranny whilst testing the shorter stick?

Man I hope not. It's not a real loud sound, either. It definately doesn't make any sort of sound in neutral...it's all good while sitting there. I haven't mashed it with the short stick...not even while testing it. It's not just when I shift...it's when the car is in gear. I hate that grindy whine sound though. I'm gonna tighten and take a look tonight...I'll let you know.
