They actually test cars in IL? I've never had to have a car tested before. Must just be around the bigger cities.

yea every few years in Illinois they send you an emissions notice. if its not done within a few months of the notice they can suspend your license.

As long as you are not throwing any codes they let you go through. They just check the computer for errors like check engine & emissions. I went a few months ago and was out in 27 seconds! Only the old cars they still use the dyno with the gas tube from what I was told.

Not any more. '95 and earlier cars are now exempt.

'96+ receive an OBD scan only test (no sniff, no visual as you already stated), for the first time when they're 4 years old, then again every 2 years.

They no longer suspend your DL, now just your plates.

There are 9 or 10 counties that do testing in IL (few around St. Louis, the rest near Chicago). In a couple of those counties it's only certain ZIP codes that have the test. It's all population based.

I've had to do emissions on older cars, maybe 8 years ago in Lake County, IL? But lately, my 95 Camaro was exempt, due to the 95 and older law (despite me having OBDII in it...) and as for my SS, I haven't received any notices while in McHenry, or Woodstock, so I have no idea?
