Just a suggestion, But offer a $100 reward to the person who finds the car for you! If that person finds it, $100 for a finders fee. That's if the car is really that sentimental to you! Hell, At least you could get in touch with the owner and try to get it back or whatever. Although, If the car is sitting in the junkyard as stated, I would at least go to that yard and look yourself. Or call them and ask them. Find out what you can from the guy who stated it was in the Junkyard and go from there.
But judging by the last statement about the title being processed again, I would really look into that a little more if it were me. You could always do what they did for Papa Johns pizza, get on a commercial or maybe just the news. or maybe Camaro Performers, or 1 of the magazine companies may hear your story and publish it to help a fellow enthusiast out. Good Luck Either Way!
Remember, that was just My .02!

I thought about a finders fee. I know of a sure way to find out who owns it, but can't at this time use that asset. I may end up doing the reward but would want to give the reward if I could strike a deal with the current owner for purchase. The above poster about the junkyard withdrew that as a joke. Its around the Peru, Indiana area, not a large town and there is an SCCA even coming up I am hoping to go watch the racing and will keep my eyes open for it too

I would see if the owner would be willing to sell it, within reason of course. I ordered the vehicle and its what I took my wife on our first date with, numerous trips together, etc etc.

I had the same issue it was a piece of metal although a motorcycle.. I bought it from a friend who was packing a back pack and was moving to florida to start over because of the job issues here in Il... Anyways, it was a 1988 vmax that was in mint condition he sold it for 1500 bucks it was a steal.. well about a year later i decided i wanted a sport bike so in my stupidity i put it for sale on craigslist for 3000 ended up actually trading it for a r6 plus some cash on my end to a guy who lived w. in 30 mins from me... I saw it at a intersection w. the guy on it i tried flagging him down but he kept going.. Anyways i was looking for it on craigslist ended up at a dealer world of power sports... Unfortunatly they wanted 5500 which was out of my price range.. It only had 23,000 miles on... it was a shame but won't be forgotten.. Hopefully you will find some luck.. I would us the tax payer dollars and have a cop look it up on their computer...

I just ran the VIN again, still shows this ^^^ as the last registration. Thats not a good sign, either sitting in a scrap yard, rotting away in somebodies back yard or tucked in a garage with a blown motor or trans.

I know of 2 locally recently but they look like they were both SS's. I know someone else has a Z28 like mine that was stripped down to a roller and is getting put back together by another member on MIFbody. You might have some luck asking on that forum.
