The main difference is gonna be the chamber size, you'll lose some compression goin to a 6.0 head VS the LS6 head unless you mill the 6.0 & even then i'm not sure if you can mill it enough to get back up to stock without PTV issues depending on cam selection.

Thats why I went with the 5.3 heads & milled them, picked up a decent amount of comp. & got a great flowing head with 220 runners for WAY cheaper than aftermarket heads. But I also wasnt tryin to squeeze every HP I could get out of it either so $2k for heads wasnt ever in the plan.

I'm putting a set of "706" 5.3 heads on my LQ4. The heads flow 295@600. So they will make a fantastic head to drive and race.
"317" are the same as "243" & "799" aside from the combustion chamber. 72cc compared to 64. They flow (the same numbers) because there the same head. For most street apications, the 5.3 head is boss hog, for a factory head, because of velocity. The bigger the runner the bigger the camshaft you need, the more rpm you need to creat the same velocity in the runner to the valve. Then you need compression or forced induction to make the most of it. That's what makes power.
Sorry if this is a ramble and off topic I've had a few beers, been working on my transmission, and haven't been keeping up with this thread lol

Went to the car show at LETRA today and wasn't overly impressed. The newer cars that were there were mostly Mustangs. A few nice ones, one of them being the new BOSS. A nice C6 vette and a couple classic Camaros. No newer F-bodys, and to top it all off as I'm driving by my dog Bomber jumped out the effing window! Somehow I look like the ******* for whooping his *** on the way back to the car. It definitely wasn't worth all the gas it took to drive out there.

Squirlnutz: so do I need forced induction to get the most out of 5.3 heads? Cause I just want to be n/a that just stomps people lol. But I do plan on big cam and heads to match just the best bang for my buck.

Burnstacp: that sucks about the dog... I had my old German Shepard do that a few times. What kind of dog was it?

On a random note my buddy just traded in his 03 gt for a 2010 gt and is afraid to race me lol. To be honest its more of a ricer if you ask me. Its baby blue with blue stripes on the seat and blue lights all over the inside, then lowered on 20's. With full exhaust and is still not loud. O and it still has cats... But yea just getting that off my chest haha

Bomber is a Rhodesian Ridgeback. He's a thorn in my side half the time but I love him to death.

Car update: When I bought the car it wreaked of exhaust leaks and came with a dyno plot that looked like muhhamad ali drew it free hand. It did put down 528rwhp despite all of that. Well I have since fixed all of the leaking, which happened to be a total of three that were before the turbo (driver header at the head, driver header to Y had NO GASKET, and welded up a crappy slipfit on the mid just before the turbo). The car is a totally different beast now. I took it out for a test drive last night and was getting sideways rolling into boost in second gear. The car now hits 10psi about 200 rpm sooner as well. I'd love to get it on a dyno and see the difference it made. Huge huge thanks to Josh and his wife. Without their help my arms would have never been able to fit in and finish the passenger side.

The 5.3 heads are great flowing heads, with a little work on them. I gave Futral Motorsports an email, and the camshaft they spect is 232/236 .598/.598 @114+4. It will get some nitrous later on. Searching the F-13 here on tech, there are several cars making 430+ to the wheels with an ls6 intake and stock short block and 5.3 heads using that cam off the shelf. With the work done and flowing almost 600 cfm, I should get 430 to the wheels easy. Also the spec's matched to the flow will make a huge difference in power across the board.
I got my heads cheep! Damn near free. If I had the cash, I would have got a set of 5.3 heads and sent them to Advanced Induction to have them work there stuff, build the heads, and I would have them spec the camshaft also.
If you search into them you will see fantastic results from there 5.3 head combo.
Although, if 12:1 compression or more is your goal, a set of 243, 799 or 317 would be great. But for most of us, the 5.3 heads will out perform the ls6 head. Unless you have 12:5.1 compression, spin the motor 7000 rpm, or use a turbo or blower of some kind.

Why do you want to shift at 7200?

X3! And a cam that is advertised to work from 1500-7200?? Typically you either get one end of the band or the other, and with that kind of duration, sounds like a 4000-7000rpm cam. Only the Dyno will tell where you need to shift.

"shelf cams" are cool to look at, and a lot of them have been proven to be great in power. But, my experience with engines, says to have a cam ground for your application. Head flow (the cam designer will take into account your intake manifold) cubic inches, weight, auto or Manuel, and what you want (how the engine performs) will dictate the cam profile. There are several cam grinders on the site that can get you exactly what you want from your car. I'd start emailing some to see what they recomend for you. You may buy a used cam and save a few bucks, but what if it don't work like you want?
I think a custom grind is the only way to go unless your going to build the car around the camshaft

Ok, yea I wasn't planning on doing anything crazy for a while. I was thinking of maybe just a 228r cam from tsp. Since I can run that with stock heads. Could that gibe me a decent bump in sound and power? If so I might just do that then save up and "build the supporting parts" for bigger power. Like tranny, rearend and what not. So many different ways to do it... But if I can get a custom cam for a good price and maybe find a set of heads I might just go that route. All about the price, plus if I get a baby cam now I can put it in my wife's car later on when she gets a ls1 car also

Email some sponsers and get there recommendation. Futral Motorsport is free! You fill the form out on line and they will email you what they recomend. That's what I did. I had my heads flow tested, so the grind is a little different.
232/238 .598/.598 @114+4
Not huge, and not little. Will drive great and hall ***. If you tell them all your needs, like max rpm, shift points, power adders, gears, tires transmission and so on. Stock motor, heads what ever, they can hook you up.
A custom grind cost the same as a shelf cam. A cam kit is a cam kit. Email Futral to start with and you'll see what I mean

241 heads? Yes would be fine. Just don't go crazy. The MS4 for instance is a huge cam that will fit for a stock ls1. But it's a turd ( cause its size) until 4000rpm. It will pull to the moon if you have a fast intake but it will also get out run by a proper combo. If you roll race on the highway say, from 100 mph, then it's a great choice. But from a dig, it needs a 4000-5000 rpm converter and at least 410 gear to be most effective. TSP ran a turbo 400 with a break when they used that cam. Also it will kill your valve train if you drive it. The 5.3 heads will make a ton of power for cheep, bolt right up to any GENlll and won't need a huge cam. Best bang for your buck. If you already have 241 then use them. I have a set of those aswell

Well I have 4:11's, and idk the converter size. I was told it was a fully built tranny but who knows. I plan on putting in a transbreak and I do mainly low rolls and from a dig. but cant hook to save my life. and yes I have stock 241's and the stock ls6 intake. as far as I know its all stock motor wise for an 02. I dont wanna invest the kind of money into some built heads when idk where exactly I want the car to go. plus dont have that kind of money.

as for a cam I want something I can run on stock head, valves, springs the whole nine.
