Question Retail Sales Tax on Out-of-State Vehicle Purcahse (dealer)...IL Residents?

As the title suggests, what is the IL policy on sales tax for a vehicle purchased out of state at a dealer? I don't suppose we're lucky enough to simply pay the flat rate tax based on model year that we pay for private intra-state sales, but how does IL know to tax you on the retail level if the dealer was in a different state? Is paperwork sent, etc.?

I'm curious about the details of the process, I've never done this before but I'm mildly considering a car at an Indiana dealer. Just wondering what the tax burden would be, if there is some savings by doing this out of state then I might be pushed in that direction vs. some comparable local cars.

Thanks for any experience/knowledge.

I bought a used truck from an Indiana dealer a few years ago, I believe at that time the tax in IN was around 6% and IL was around 8%. I paid the 6% in Indiana and when I went to the DMV out here for plates, I had to pay the remaining 2% difference.
