If you actually had insurance, and just misplaced your card, just go and get proof and then go to court. If you didnt have insurance at all i dont know what to tell you.

Did you have insurance on another car that you would be transferring? I would think that you have a few days to get insurance. The bill of sale should be proof of when you purchased the car. Was it on a day that the insurace Co was closed?

I have State Farm, and here in IL they give you quite a few days to actually call and get the policy transferred/started on a newly purchased car so long as you have another car already covered by them. It's either 10 or 30 days. If you only had it a day or two, I'm sure you'll be alright, assuming you had a previous policy already in force at the time.....
Only thing is, I'm not sure if that's just State Farm's rules or if it's IL law.

if you already had the car for a day (when closed) and you had a chance to buy insurance the current day (without having any previously) here in IL you're pretty much outta luck. Think about it, how are you supposed to cover any damage if you haven't had any insurance in the first place and why are you driving knowing you don't have any. That's what a judge would lecture you with.

Dress nice and go in clean cut when you see the judge (yes your honor, no your honor) and hopefully they'll go easy on you and drop it. As Steve Burger mentioned, go in with insurance to show an effort. You can also pray really hard that the officer doesn't show up. I doubt the state's attorney will try to continue the case.
Good luck!
