Like the title says, I was wondering what all I have to do to go about buying a gun in Illinois. I don't want to hunt (yet anyway), I just want to buy a gun for recreational purposes and go out and shoot targets and stuff. I have never owned gun (duh, obviously) and dont know how to go about getting one. Any help would help me out as i would love to have one.

first you have to apply for a F.O.I.D. card...you can get one at Sportmart or Sports Authority. They wil give you instructions on how to fill out out and where to send it...After you get the card back you can go to a store to buy a gun.....there is a 24 hour waiting period for shotguns and rifles and a 3 day waiting period for pistols

depending on your budget (guns are another one of the extremely expensive hobbies like our cars) but I would get a pistol or some sort of target rifle like an assault rifle. Shotguns are awesome if you want to shoot skeet as well. Pistols and AR15's can be pricey where as you can get just a rifle or shotgun for pretty cheap.

I think a shotgun is a very good purchase for a first time gun owner. It is easy to handle and very easy to shoot. It will make you comfortable around firearms.
I have two guns right now. One is a Remington 870 shotgun and the other is a Glock 22. The 870 is my all purpose gun. I use it to shoot clays, dove hunting, or deer hunting. Just recently have I started looking into AR-15's. I really have no use for one right now.
And I have to agree with above, the FOID card wait is about 6 weeks. In the meantime, look for a hunters safety course in your area. They will teach you how to safely handle a gun and also about safe hunting if you choose to do that later on down the road.

I'm a fan of S&W and Beretta personally. had S&W 9 and 10 mm (still have) and the the 2 Beretta U22 Neos plinking guns (fun target practice great for huntin small animals) Now form my dads work he was issued a Glock 40 lets see if they wont lock up as sold like they say. My dad is an Illinois State Police officer, so he has owned several firearms, and his 10mm is his favorite, however does not have the knockdown power of the .40 caliber very similar however. The 10 is a smoothe shot compared to many other guns however much smoother than the 9mm S&W he had, But iw as a fan of the 9mm and def. a fan of the .22's because of my comfort level. When you go think of what your main purpose for the gun is for, then sort it down to comfort level, then down to price. By doing this i found it easier to select a gun that would suit me best rather then getting something for its name or its infamous background. just my $.02

I agree about the shotguns, they are inexspensive and cheap to shoot, plus they are the choice for home protection. If you are getting somthing to shoot target consider the cost of the rounds, for example a box of 9mm is like $6 but a box of .40 might be $10, that $4 adds up quick. I have fired a Bushmaster AR-15 many times and they are great rifles, not cheap to shoot though, but lots of fun.

I agree with everyone above. Don't forget you need a gun case to carry your rifle/shotgun around in. Legally you aren't supposed to transport a gun without a case. And it must be unloaded. I think the Illinois State website has the laws about transporting firearms.
If you are just looking for something to shoot for fun I think a basic pump shotgun is a good choice. You can get a new Mossberg 500 or Remington 870 for ~$300, maybe less. I have a Mossberg 590 that I use. I am partial to Glock pistols, and I like Sig pistols too.

Glock 22's and remington 870's are everywhere....
and for good reason, they are excellent guns and everyone who want's to get into shooting should either shoot or handle these two peices before making a purchase.

WOW!! Those guns look badass!! It was the Assualt Style Guns that got me into wanting a weapon, i just like the looks and the shear firepower. However, with me just starting off and getting into guns, i think i need t get more familiar with them and what not before going all out. I have been looking at the Ruger 10/22. Is this a good choice. What do you all think about it and what is your opinion
