One week after Mother Nature cancelled the 2006 opening event, the third season of the Street Car
Shootout Series at Gateway International Raceway began with a large turnout of competitors, a new
series sponsor and exceptional atmospheric conditions. By the evening’s end, SCSS veteran Tony
Huff scored his first victory in his first outing with a new car while a wide variety of machinery
produced a surprisingly quick Super 16 field.

Sunny skies and a temperature of 63 degrees at the start of timed trials kept the track surface above
65 degrees even after dusk while high barometric pressure allowed the corrected elevation to range
from 545 feet above sea level to 124 below sea level by the conclusion of the race. The new sponsor
of the SCSS program, SX Performance Fuel Systems, ( http://www.sx-performance.com ), presented
all-new “Fastest Street Car Qualifier” decals to all qualifiers as well as trophies for the finalists. In
addition, the contestants in all three championship final rounds earned two full-event passes, (a $60
value), to Gateway International Raceway’s upcoming American Drag Racing League/Flowmaster
Pro Modified Championships, (April 14th and 15th), courtesy of http://www.OutlawProMods.com,
http://www.BretKepnerPhotos.com and the ADRL Series.

While timed trials found Shaun McCauley’s 2005 Z06 Corvette clocking the quickest pass at
11.55/108.59, (while playing “DQ Roulette” to perfection against GIR’s NHRA-mandated
11.50-second requirement for a roll bar), it was Ralph Meek’s ‘68 302 Mustang which hit the first
serious pass in the official qualfiying period at 11.86/119.21. Meek held the low qualifying position
for almost thirty minutes before McCauley returned to post an 11.80-second elapsed time at an
impressive 126.21 miles per hour. The Corvette lasted only two minutes at the top of the Super 16
field, however; Greg “Hook ‘N Ladder” Boschert, the St. Louis firefighter who finished second in the
2005 SCSS Point Championship, pushed his familiar white 331-cubic inch ‘66 Mustang coupe to an
11.25/123.14 effort.

Thirty minutes later, Tony Huff pulled into the water box with the new silver 1968 Chevy Nova owned
by his brother, Dale. The Collinsville, Illinois, siblings had campaigned a variety of first-generation
Camaros exclusively since the inception of the Tuesday night SCSS events with Tony finishing sixth
in the ‘05 points chase after amassing thirteen “Fastest Street Car Qualifier” decals since 2004.
Utilizing a naturally-aspirated 454-cubic inch powerplant and a two-speed PowerGlide transmission,
the new Nova proved its ability on the very first pass, running 10.52/125.76. It would be another
half-hour until any other competitor joined Huff in the ten-second zone. Mike Faller, whose
Springfield, Illinois-based Team Katfish ‘98 346 Camaro had earned one event title and three
runners-up in SCSS competition since ‘04, opened with an easy 11.76/117.30 but, with nitrous
system engaged, produced a career-best 10.70 at 125.88 mph. Alternating the driving duties with
partner Lambert Fleck, Faller’s black Chevy improved again to a 10.62/125.65 but not before Huff
reeled off 10.47/126.78 and 10.431/127.46 blasts to solidify his grip on the pole position. Boschert
could muster no better than an 11.16/125.97 in an attempt to gain a final-round berth. Surprisingly, it
was McCauley’s Z06 which eventually clocked the event’s fastest speed during another spin of the
Roulette wheel with a “dead-on” 11.50 at 129.27 miles per hour!

“We spent the winter getting the nitrous system figured out”, said Faller as partner Fleck readied for
the final round. “We’re also now using a transmission brake which actuates the nitrous on the
launch.” Fleck admitted, “We really didn’t know quick it would run. We were ready to come down for
the opening event last week but this week we managed to get new tires, too”. Although Fleck and
Huff were seperated by less than two tenths of a second, the Nova pilot’s 0.076-second Reaction
Time in the championship dash ended the argument quickly. With another 10.43 at 127.29 mph, Huff
outran the Camaro’s slowing 10.80/118.09. “The car has run really well so far”, said Huff during the
trophy presentation. “We actually took the 454 out of Dale’s red Camaro and dropped it in for this
season. We want to add nitrous like we’ve had on all our other Camaros but we wanted to get this
car lined out first. I think it’s ready!”

The first event of the 2006 SCSS season featured appearances by both previous SCSS Point
Champions. Ford pilot Laurence Bass was spectating while his Mustang is prepared for its first
outing next week and reigning champ Kevin Kolkmeyer missed qualifying for the Super 16 field by
less than a tenth of a second with a best of 12.34/113.44 from his new LS1-powered ‘98 Corvette.

APRIL 4th, 2006 GATEWAYRACEWAY.COM SPORT TUNER SHOWDOWN FINAL
ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W Ross Randall, Chesterfield, MO 2005 122 Evolution 0.329 12.953 106.35
RU Brian Orsborn, Granite City, IL 2004 146 Neon 0.185 13.573 119.32

Brian Orsborn, the Granite City, Illinois, Neon SRT-4 campaigner whose “Boosted” red Dodge was
the first to hit 120 mph in the Sport Tuner Showdown Series, appeared to be well on his way to
continuing his late 2004 domination. It was Missouri’s Ross Randall, however, who proved the race
ain’t over ‘til it’s over.

Orsborn had appeared in three of the last four final rounds of 2004 in the process of earning three
wins and two runners-up during the season. When the red Dodge immediately clocked a 12.33 at
116.37 mph, it appeared little had changed over the winter. When the familiar white Eagle Talon of
the winningest driver in SCSS history pulled into the water box, things seemed even more familiar;
Patrick Jacobsmeyer’s 12.08 at 116.82 proved he was out for blood in 2006, as well.

Just after Orsborn reclaimed the lead with a 12.04, (with an incredible 122.31 mph top end which just
missed breaking Justin Bondurant’s Sport Tuner Series speed record), the tone of the Tuner
Showdown began to change. Bondurant’s next effort was stopped before it ever began when the
Talon lost fire and refused to start. As the ten-time finalist surveyed the potent 4G63T Mitsubishi
four-cylinder under the hood in front of the Gateway tower, Jacobsmeyer was perplexed. “I have no
idea what’s wrong. I put on a new manifold over the winter and it may have a leak”. As the JP Racing
Eagle returned to the pits to diagnose the problem, Orsborn began battling traction woes of his own.
One of the most remarkable runs of the event came from the diminutive black ‘77 Ford Pinto of
Decatur, Illinoisan Joe Laramee. After clocking a 2004 best of 12.22/114 with the naturally-aspirated,
rear-wheel-drive, 148-cubic inch four-cylinder, Laramee appeared for ‘06 with a turbocharged
version of the same engine rumored to be producing over 600 horsepower. After rolling through the
starting line beams on his only effort, Laramee pushed the car to the 1000-feet mark before blowing
the head gasket out of the little Ford but not before clocking an ungodly 108 mph in the eighth-mile!

When the call was made for the finalists to report in front of the grandstands for the championship
bout, Jacobsmeyer was still underneath the Talon in the pits and quickly reported he would be
unable to make the race. That brought forth the third qualifier, Ross Randall and his 2005 Mitsubishi
Evolution which had obliterated his previous 13.44/102 best with a tremendous 12.76/108.44 effort,
keeping the Chesterfield, Missourian ahead of Jim Delaney’s supercharged, front-wheel-drive ‘98
Buick Regal, (12.91/107.73), and Donny Funk’s blown FWD ‘01 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP,
(12.98/109.37).

In the final round, Orsborn’s FWD Neon gained a 0.14-second hoelshot but Randall’s Evo used its
all-wheel-drive efficiency to regain the lead by the sixty-feet clocks. As Orsborn grabbed second
gear, the shifter **** broke off; suddenly, the Illinois racer was forced to “grab the shaft” and make
an attempt to row through the gears. In the other lane, Randall also missed a shift. By the time both
recovered, Randall managed a 12.95/106 victory while Orsborn trailed with a “never-say-die” 13.57
at 119.32 mph!

“I can’t believe I missed agear and still won!”, exclaimed Randall as Orsborn offered congratulations
during the trophy presentation, “I kept looking for him but he never did come by me. I wasn’t sure
what was happening over there”. Orsborn admitted, “That was a mess. At first, I grabbed the ****
and, for some reason, thought it would go right back on. It didn’t”. If nothing else, both Orsborn and
Jacobsmeyer earned points by qualifying for the Super 16 field in the opening event.

APRIL 4th, 2006 GATEWAYRACEWAY.COM SUPER TRUCK SHOWDOWN FINAL
ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W Kevin Goss, Brighton, IL 1978 406 El Camino 0.031 12.288 109.27
RU Hal Marshall, Collinsville, IL 1986 350 S-10 0.239 15.478 92.45

With a new front end and a diet-induced interior, Hal Marshall looked to continue his astounding
streak of six consecutive Super Truck Showdown victories at the end of 2004. Despite a faulty shifter
which caused the well-known S-10 from Collinsville, Illinois, to fall out of gear on its first two
attempts, Marshall’s little white pickup finally stepped up to a career-best 11.21 elapsed time at
118.25 mph to lead all qualifiers by a large margin.

In fact, only Kevin Goss’ ‘78 El Camino, (12.20/110.08), and Tim Hamilton’s impressive Pevely,
Missouri-based 2004 Dodge Ram SRT-10 with 505-inch Cummings diesel power, (13.07/108.55),
were serious contenders for a final round berth opposite Marshall’s all-conquering Chevy. A past
High School Eliminator season champion and a renowned bracket racer, Goss made four qualifying
runs between 12.20 and 12.27, (with a worst Reaction Time of 0.042!), but knew that his Weiand
supercharger-equipped “Liquidator” El Camino was a full second away from being able to outrun
Marshall. “On the last qualifying run, it threw off all the belts”, noted Goss before the final round, “so
were we going to head home. But my dad said we should just go run the final just to see what
happens”.

What happened was a totally unexpected hard right hook for Marshall’s S-10 just after launching
behind a two tenths of a second holeshot. By the time Marshall got the truck straight, there was no
hope of catching the kid from Brighton, Illinois. “Central Avenue Auto Parts in Alton just became one
of our sponsors”, said Goss after the final round, “so this is a great way to kick off the year for them.
I’m glad we stuck around!”
