That setup works well for me. In my position it's really hard for me to be away for any longer than a day or two without some sort of freak out happening. Then I just have to fix a bunch of stuff when I get back. Not fun. So the extended weekends are a nice compromise, since my wife and I aren't really the type to travel much anyway.

Wow, I get two weeks paid vacation a year after working for the same company for the last 4.5 years. I don't get any personal or sick days, I don't get holiday's off, and I work every single weekend(litterally).
I would kill for just a normal weekend off much less a three day weekend. I agree with you though, if I could work a Mon-Fri type job I would use most of my vacation days on Friday's giving myself a three day weekend.

there comes a point where time becomes WAY more important and valuable than money. if all you do is spend your time making money and you have no personal time, it just throws everything out of whack.

i would never say it to my boss, but i'd consider a paycut if it meant i got to go home at 5 everyday and not work weekends. but sure as **** if that were to happen i'd prolly be bummed i didnt make enough money.

i wanna be 5 again and eat cheerios and watch scooby doo. those were the days...

Unfortunatly, in today's marketplace, that balance is getting harder and harder to achieve. Many of us just give in, it just seems easier that way. I know I have.

Very true. I'm only 23 so I'd rather work hard and tons of hours now myself. My wife and I put tons of money into our 401K, savings accounts, CD's, etc... Basicly we're working hard now so we can retire early and not have to work until the day we die.

My wife and I have the same plan. People wonder why I try to save so much money every year, they wonder what makes me such a greedy stingy bastard...... the answer is: EARLY RETIREMENT! It's hard to be that disciplined when you're young though, beleive me I know as I'm only a few years older than you. But I think it's worth it.

Only place I fall short is on the 401K investing. I hate to tie money up in that right now, because I'll need all the available cash assets I can get if I do try to start a business. So I invest my money in other ways that make it more accessible if needed.

It makes life so much easier saving all that money. Friend's don't really understand it until they start talking about how they don't think they'll have enough money to pay rent this month and so forth. I love knowing if a car broke down, one of us got really hurt, or whatever we'll be ok moneywise and that peace of mind is worth more than money could ever buy.

LOL, I know exactly what you mean. Money = Freedom. Money = Security. I sleep better at night knowing that I've got enough cash to go for a couple years without working if I needed to. When a car breaks or something goes wrong, it's very nice to know you have the money to fix whatever need be.

People I work with, and some of my friends live check to check, they think it's OK because "What if I die tomorrow?". That's always their answer. Well, odds are aganist people in our age range dying in the very near future. On the other hand, I always answer them with "what if you DON'T die tomorrow?". They just don't seem to get it.

That's OK. When I'm 55 and already retired with no debt and they have 20 more years to work, then they'll get it.

That's how I look at it to. My dad is about to retire and he's 50 while my wife's parent's are in their late 50's and are barely making ends meet because of the way they've wasted their money. Her dad makes good money so it's not like my dad makes tons more. My parents have always been very careful with their money and hre parents will blow it whenever they get a little. Now they have HUGE debt, owe more on their house than it's worth, have one car between the both of them and it's dash is lit up like a christmas tree with all the warning lights but they can't afford to get it fixed. I just don't understand how some people could live like that.
I mean I can sorta understand it. If you're not looking into the future it's easy to blow your money. I would love to build a twin turbo motor for my car but I won't because of how much it costs. Do the math, invest that money now and it'll be worth so much more when I'm 55.

I work at a Chevrolet dealer in the QuickLube Lane, and im down in the pit from 8 to 5 changing oil, and a lot of times, it really sucks. the one day, i was walking out of the pit, all pissed because i just burned myself several times, and banged my elbow on a steel rail pretty good, and i just happened to look out the garage door and saw a Black WS6 driving by. my mood quickly changed and i walked back down to do the next car. talk about keeping your eye on the prize.

I learned at an early age how NOT to act with money. My father was doing very well with his business by the late '80s. Then in 1990 he became very ill and he died in 1993. The business fell apart. Even though large sums of money had come in, very little was saved. Worse yet, my mother had even lesser money management skills and before long what little cash there was, was gone. It was a very bad situation, and life sucked during that period. Never knowing when we'd get kicked out of our house, or if the electricity would be on or off. I made a decision during that time that I wanted to reduce the chances of facing such a hardship again as an adult. I took my grandparents as an example to live by, they did an excellet job of building a comfortable lifestyle with careful budgeting that allowed for some of the finer things in life, but that put savings and security as the top priority. Sadly, much of these lessons have been lost by many in today's younger crowd.
