i understand, especially with gas prices and everything..I was simply stating that i was NEVER informed about a tow fee..Especially when i asked what the TOTAL price would be, there was NEVER a mention of a tow fee, until i picked up the car.

Great point! Nothing is free these days. If you didn't ask how much it'll cost, then you are responsible for the bill at the end of the day. We all (myself included) assume way too much these days.

Let me say that I've had a bit of work done by Straightline as well as others in my car club and we've been nothing but totally satisfied not only with the work but with the customer service as well. They've always been up front with everything.

I'm not in the speed shop business or anything, but at our hardware store with small engines and lawn mowers we always ask the customer before had if its over such and such a price, which they tell us before service, we will give them a call. Also in retail if i didn't tell the customer what the price of an object was out the door if they put it on account then I wouldn't be servicing the custmer correctly in my mind. The speed shop should have let the customer know what a tow charge was or even let the customer know there was a tow charge on the spot. I have noticed over the years customers alway assume if a price isn't stated it is always free.

Also to the original poster i think it is a good thing you can state your experience to others. Manufacturers and service centers pay a lot of money every year to get customers recommendations and experiences. Also I know if i asked a customer what he or she thought of my store they would give me a completely different answer then what they would tell their friends. So this speed shop should take this experience and try to improve themselves if they see the need in their area, or do nothing and take offense. But i know that if their was a forum about hardware in my area i would be taking as many suggestions I possibly could from it.

I will back up Speed on this - I ordered the pump from Speed, not Jake. I did let him know as soon as I knew about it. Speed told me as soon as they knew.

Lets be friendly here

Really? People actually think that if a price isn't posted at a store, on a website or any type of rate that it is free?

I feel when the customer called Straightline for a tow before he even gave them the OK to come tow it he should have asked for the price. Lets say Straightline was a bad company (which there not) they could have easily of wanted more after they towed and said tough luck and locked the car up until it was paid for. Towing companies where I am from do this. I feel the rate is resonable based off of it taken 3 hours.

Yes, many times whenever a customer comes to me with a piece they need tapped or drilled and i just take it to my shop to work on it on my time they do assume its free. Some times i have people having a problem with paying $10 for a 30 minute fix. Must be the difference in clientel. I am a small business and everyone knows me personally, so that might be the problem.

Hmmmm, two sponsors, not from the Midwestern Forum, chiming in. Are you guys talking about this in the Private Sponsor forum???

Communication is key in any business transaction. I think Jake assumed there wouldn't be a tow fee because he didn't ask, but it's not Mike's fault that he wasn't up front about it. Jake should have assumed there was one. I think the topic is tired. I am gonna go drink a beer or a case.

Props to Straightline for commenting. You don't always get that kind of response from most sponsors when someone post something like this up.

i don't personally use sponsors that often as I do almost everything myself. Usually stuff that i just don't have the time to do gets sourced out like laying on my back and fabricating exhaust...no fun, but i do it from time to time. Anyway, I am from the dallas area of TX, and things are really different there as far as the # of shops and the quality of work some of them do, but I will concur that many of the people that work at 90% of those shops are people like me who merely chose to do it for a living. I've just found there to be less headache and more money in it to keep it as a hobby or side job occasionally. This brings me to the quality issue. A lot, not all, of the mechanics working at those shops are people who are just that. Mechanics or wrench turners, and really aren't business owners nor are they business grads for the most part. Bottom line is people aren't perfect and none should expect them to be. However, hopefully these guys are thorough enough to make sure the wheels and important stuff doesnt fall off after you drive away. Seems like there really are a few of those type of shops around still. I can only count on one hand how many I've seen publicly handle a situation the way this one has been handled. Again, Props to straightline!

Sounds like Mike did help you out. I promise you that you call my shop broke down I will give you the number to the towing service and let you handle it. My trucks and trailers DO NOT haul customers cars for this exact reason.

Just wanted to chime in and share my Straightline experiance. Ive been dealing with them for about 1 year. Great guys to be involved with. Its actually fun to go there. Alot of these other shops dont have time to get involved with the cars they work on. At Straightline its still a fun hobby for them and they take pride in their cars. $550 is a sweet deal for quality work and rest assured they will back that job 100% and help out with other projects you might have in the future. Just my .02.
