JULY 22nd, 2008 STREET CAR SHOOTOUT SERIES FINAL ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W Tony Huff, Collinsville, IL 1957 510 Bel-Air 0.205 8.814 150.90
RU Tim Mallicoat, Collinsville, IL 1968 565 Camaro -0.050 (foul) 8.693 156.70

Despite a layoff of almost three weeks, Tony Huff picked up where he left off on July 1 and scored a second consecutive event victory in the 2008 Street Car Shootout Series at Gateway International Raceway in Madison, Illinois. In a classic showdown with archrival Tim “Moose” Mallicoat, Tony Huff wheeled the Dale Huff Motorsports 1957 Chevrolet Bel-Air to a critical win which included more than a little luck.

A cold front which rolled over the facility during the previous night tamed the near 100-degree heat which had plagued the area for days and, with temperatures ranging from only 82 degrees when the gates opened to a low of 74, atmospheric conditions were tolerable despite humidity above eighty percent. The corrected elevation ranged from almost 2200 feet above sea level to a surprisingly good 1618 feet during the final rounds. Although a rarity in July, several competitors clocked career-best performances during the evening courtesy of a tremendous amount of track grooming by the GIR crew.

With the July 8 event rained out only a half-hour into the race and the GIR dragstrip closed on July 15 as scheduled due to facility reconfiguration for the Missouri-Illinois Dodge Dealers 250 NASCAR Nationwide Series event on the GIR oval on July 18 and 19, Tony Huff pulled into the pits as the defending weekly champion for the July 22 edition of the SCSS. Only a handful of high-horsepower entries braved the hot track surface during early timed trials, (led by returning veteran David Starns’ silver ’91 Mustang at 10.90 seconds, 119.43 miles per hour), but Mallicoat wasted no time in setting the pace after the official qualifying session began by taking his naturally-aspirated ’68 Camaro down the quarter-mile with a solid 8.71/157.04 effort. Although Ray Arthur’s nitrous oxide-injected bigblock-powered “Suspicion” ’67 Camaro posted a 9.60/143.87 within the next thirty minutes, the only serious battle for the pole qualifying position was between Mallicoat and Huff. The black ’57 Bel-Air finally made an appearance one hour into the qualifying period and, with little effort, Tony Huff blasted to a 1.28-second sixty-feet elapsed time and then streaked to a brilliant 8.49/160.69 to lead the Super Sixteen field. Mallicoat’s “Hellraiser” Chevy returned in the cooler night air and improved to an 8.68/156.94 but remained second on the qualifying list.

When eliminations began, reigning SCSS season point champion Mallicoat was scheduled to meet 2006 SCSS Champ Tony Buhl’s Vortech-supercharged smallblock Mustang which struggled to hit a 10.44/128.20 to qualify fourth. “I think the problem is in the injector”, said Buhl, who spent all of 2007 fighting an electrical glitch which turned out to be a faulty alternator, “but right now it’s getting down the track so I’ll run it in eliminations”. As the Camaro and the Mustang inched into the staging beams, a flood of antifreeze and water poured from under the radiator of the Ford and Buhl was forced to shut down by the GIR starting line crew. Mallicoat used the free pass to the final round to test the track and, with a 1.30-second “sixty”, produced a consistent 8.67/156.63.

As the starting line crew cleaned the liquid from Buhl’s lane, Tony Huff was in the midst of a huddle with crew chief Bill Silva, who informed Huff the team’s sole nitrous oxide cannister may not be as full as originally thought. “If you’re ahead of Ray, get out of the throttle before the finish line”, said Silva of the impending match with Arthur, “because we need to save enough for the final round”. When Huff finally staged against Arthur’s red Camaro, the black Bel-Air shot to an even quicker 1.27-second “sixty” while grabbed a monstrous four-tenths of a second holeshot, to boot. Arthur held on as his Chevy drove into a wheelstand and landed far to the left of the lane‘s “groove”, forcing the Edwardsville, Illinoisan to lift off the gas to straighten the car. However, when Arthur got back on the throttle, he was still out of the “groove” and the “Suspicion” Chevy smoked the tires furiously as Huff drove to the thousand feet mark and shut off to a 8.54 at a coasting 144.80 mph.

After Huff returned back in front of the main grandstands to prepare for the final round, he was greeted with bad news. After checking the nitrous tank, Silva announced, “If there’s any left in there, it ain’t much!”. Although Mallicoat didn’t know it, the championship dash had just become a much closer race. Silva and Huff remained tight-lipped, however, and went about their normal routine. We honestly thought it was going to rain tonight”, admitted car owner Dale Huff, “and we haven’t touched the car since the July 8 race. I decided not to fill the bottles because I honestly thought we’d be rained out. We really weren’t even prepared to leave the shop tonight!”.

Whatever the problems, Mallicoat was unaware. He only knew that Huff had a tenth of a second advantage in the previous rounds and, as in any match between the two winningest drivers in the history of the Street Car Shootout Series, he needed every bit of a starting line advantage to have a chance. Mallicoat, the only driver to amass twenty wins in the series, and Huff, whose twenty-seven SCSS final round appearances is the most of any driver, collectively have appeared in fifty-one of the ninety-one SCSS trophy battles held. In fact, Huff has qualified for fifty-six of those ninety-one events…and Mallicoat has never failed to make a field since he started competing at the end of 2006. Both drivers had already earned three wins this season.

As he prepared to stage, Huff purged the nitrous system and a plume of oxygen mist rose over the widshield; all appeared to be well. On the third amber light, Mallicoat gambled on the holeshot…and lost. A redlight start by fifty thousandths of a second ended the race on the starting but Mallicoat’s nightmare was just beginning.

Huff was out of nitrous oxide.

A full-throttle 8.81/150.90 was the best Huff could pull out of the big Bel-Air. In the other lane, Mallicoat ran 8.69/156.70. “That was the worst possible time to go red”, said a dejected Mallicoat during trophy presentations, “but how was I to know he was out of juice? I did what I had to do and I’ll just have to live with it”. Huff was just as surprised. “I really didn’t think we’d run out of nitrous”, he said as he accepted his twelfth career winner’s trophy. “I knew it would be close but I figured it would run out way downtrack. I think the last bit in the bottle was spent on the purge. When it left, I could tell it was empty. We just flat got away with one this time“.

NOTES FROM THE SCSS: No less than eight different drivers earned their first Fastest Street Car qualifier decals by making the Super Sixteen field…Dave Starns, a ten-time qualifier who earned his first decal on May 17th, 2005, qualified for the first time since June 13th, 2006, with his silver ’91 Mustang running a best of 10.85/126.21...Jeff Longford’s immaculate ’67 Cougar joined the 120 MPH Club with a best-ever 11.13/124.80...Jodie Foster’s wheel standing burgundy ’93 Mustang also joined the 120 MPH Club as did Richard Lozano’s blue smallblock ’68 Camaro…Seven different manufacturers, (Chevy, Ford, Eagle, Mercury, Volkswagen, Plymouth and Pontiac), were represented in one of the most diverse Super Sixteen fields ever…There were some weird ones in the mix, too; Brian Pilch ran 12.91/105.15 with his 327 Chevy-powered ‘71 Datsun 240Z and Neal Luther clocked 12.97/109.77 in an LS1-powered ‘93 Mazda RX7!…Greg DeBourge has taken the lead in the annual “Most Expensive Tuesday Night Racer” contest; he ran a best of 13.69/104.75 in his turbocharged 132-cubic inch four-cylinder rear-wheel-drive ‘93 Lotus Esprit S4 which originally listed for $131,870.

JULY 22nd, 2008 STLSR.COM SPORT TUNER SHOWDOWN FINAL ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W Denny Christman, Arnold, MO 1991 122 Talon 6.698 11.204 127.79
RU Adam Corbitt, St. Charles, MO 1985 123 Golf Gti Shut Off On Starting Line

Although he’d never competed in the St. Louis Street Racing.com Sport Tuner Showdown prior to the 2008 season, Denny Christman is now the year’s only three-time winner. Ironically, the HillCo Axles driver scored this event title as an alternate, only making the final round when the flagship of the HillCo team couldn’t race for the title!

Adnan “Otto” Omerovic, whose black 4G63T-powered all-wheel-drive ‘91 Eagle Talon has earned nine victories in twelve final rounds, stunned the fans with a 10.60-second qualifying shot which culminated in a speed of 141.50 miles per hour, a new SCSS AWD speed record which eclipsed his own 140.52 mark set on September 11, 2007. Omerovic’s HillCo-backed Talon had suffered problems with a new turbocharger combination in 2008 and actually lost its only final-round battle of the year on May 20 to Christman. “We’ve been trying a lot of new things with nitrous oxide”, said Omerovic, “but I think there’s a problem with the coils and a few clutch bugs, as well. The entire combination is so different; we just haven’t had enough time at the track to get it sorted out. We’ve learned a lot on the dyno but getting things to work at the track is a completely different proposition”.

Omerovic attempted another qualifying run but the car stumbled badly. Another run in late timed trials after the conclusion of qualifying produced the same result. Despite being the low qualifier, Omerovic withdrew from the field rather than risk damage. The second quickest entry arrived late following an afternoon dyno thrash; SCSS FWD record holder Adam Corbitt made his first run with only thirty minutes remaining in the official qualifying period but the Corbitt Brothers/Polk Audio/Dub Werks turbocharged ‘85 Volkswagen Golf Gti screamed to an 11.14/133.95. Ironically, that run bumped Denny Christman from the field; the blue HillCo ‘91 Talon had clocked a series of low eleven-second runs with a best of 11.17 at a slowing 113.14 mph. Christman admitted he was suffering from clutch problems of his own, noting, “On the 11.17 run, I shifted into fourth gear and the car just fell on its face. I made another run and left it in third gear and it ran 11.54 but at 125.29 mph. That’s my fastest speed ever and I never used fourth gear. There’s something really wrong going on here”.

The fourth spot was occupied by past STSS event finalist Phil Van Booven’s new ‘92 Plymouth Laser RS, (which posted a strong 11.97/117.49), followed by Stephen Russell’s impressive ‘91 Mitsubishi Galant VR4, (a best-ever 12.70/111.50), Aaron Hannibal’s ‘90 Talon, (another career-best 13.261/114.75), Andy Mueggenburg’s new ‘05 Subaru WRX Sti Wagon, (a best-ever 13.264/103.95), and Greg DeBourge in his aforementioned ‘93 Lotus Esprit S4, (13.69/104.75).

Even with Omerovic out, the HillCo team still had Chistman as a representative in the trophy battle but Corbitt was dealing with problems, too. On a late timed trial before the final round, Corbitt’s VW was shut off on the starting line when a steady drip of oil began pooling underneath the car. After heading back to the pits, Corbitt quickly returned in front of the grandstands ready for the championship dash. “Our overflow tank was full”, laughed Corbitt. “We usually only empty it at the end of the season!“. The laughter didn’t last long, however; while staging against Christman in the final round, the oil puddle reappeared and Corbitt was shut down on the line for the second time in thirty minutes. Christman was sent on a solo run for his third victory and recorded an 11.20 at another career-best speed, 127.79 mph…in third gear. Amazingly, the number one qualifier has only won two of the nine completed STSS events in 2008. Christman’s victory was the third for an alternate this year!

JULY 22nd, 2008 GATEWAYRACEWAY.COM SUPER TRUCK SHOWDOWN FINAL ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W John Brawley, Granite City, IL 1993 355 S-10 0.008 11.730 115.18
RU Al Ingram, Belleville, IL 1990 572 Silverado 0.011 12.269 112.13

While the record book has taken a pounding in the 2008 GatewayRaceway.com Super Truck Showdown by a variety of fast trucks, John Brawley doesn’t seem worried. Since taking over the driving chores of Ray Arthur’s show-quality “S-10 Revenge” pickup at the beginning of the season, Brawley earned the first victory for the R&R Towing team on May 20 and took a runner-up at the July 1 event. His second victory not only brought a smile to Ray Arthur’s face but proved that Brawley is a capable driver who can deliver under pressure.

His 11.92/115.18 qualifying shot wasn’t his quickest run of the season but it was enough to lead the field by three tenths of a second. The big battle was for the other final-round berth but Al Ingram, a veteran of the Super Truck Series, earned the spot with a career-best 12.25/112.13 from his heavyweight ‘90 Silverado 1500 454SS. Ingram’s only victory in three previous final rounds came at the third event ever for the Truck program on May 24, 2005, when his pickup was powered by a supercharged 454. In 2007, Ingram yanked the 454 from the engine bay and replaced it with a 572-cubic inch “crate motor” which promptly dropped the truck into the low twelve-second zone. Late in the qualifying period, Ingram shocked fans familiar with his black Silverado when he smoked the tires for over one hundred feet off the starting line. “I decided to put a little 100 hp nitrous system on it”, said Ingram after the run, “and that was the first time I used it. I guess I won’t be using it again tonight!”.

Ingram survived repeated attacks in the remainder of qualifying from the gorgeous silver 1953 Chevy 3100 pickup of John Struckhoff; the 360-inch smallblock showpiece ran a best of 12.65/109.24 but eventually succumbed to a fuel delivery problem on subsequent runs. Ingram could only hope that a holeshot and another low twelve-second pass would hold off the “S-10 Revenge” in the trophy dash but Brawley quickly ended any hopes of an upset with a brilliant 0.008 Reaction Time in the final round, after which he simply drove away from the Silverado with an 11.73/115.18. “We actually saved some money tonight”, said Brawley during winner’s circle ceremonies in front of the main grandstand. “We only made one qualifying run and then ran the final. We filled it up with 87 octane at the gas station on the way here and I think we may have come out ahead for once!”.
