GT is "General Trainability" it has nothing to do with your AFQT of 83. 71 is the qualifier for all jobs and i believe 110 is the gt requirement, 83 is good though. I got a 93 and scored a 140 GT score and i thought the test was stupid and easy, the gp of the military is pretty ******* stupid. The servicemen you find on this seem to all be pretty intelligent though. I hear ppl brag about getting high ASVAB scores and i just laugh at them. I mean seriously how can you brag about acing a test thats on a 8th grade level? Ask your recruiter for a copy of your line scores(he'll know what you are talking about) and then evaluate the requirements for all the mos' you are looking at. If you fall short then redo the test, make sure your satisfied BEFORE you go to basic because after that theres no re-takes.

Thats not true, you can retake the ASVAB all you want, the kicker is that is you score lower on subsequent tests you are stuck with the lower score. I know lots of people that retook the test on active duty so they could reclass into a different MOS. There are many books and programs dedicated to ASVAB score improvement.

I got a 92 and qualified for all jobs and was told it was pretty good, but another guy that took the test got a low 70 score but he was able to go any rate he wanted as well, so Im sure your good to go

GT= general technical and the test is based on a tenth grade level. with an 83 out of a 99 i would say your fine. each service breaks down the individual line scores a little differently but the GT of 110/115 will get you just about anywhere. When you review your MOS make sure that this will be something you have interest in or will make you marketable in the civilian sector. i hated seeing people score very well on the asvab and decide to go into the infantry or some other MOS because of a bonus. I know it just appeals to some, and there is nothing wrong with that but I like to make people think long term. Retirement in the military comes while your still young, i will be 39 when i hit my 20yr mark. So you have to have some skill that is marketable for the next 25yrs or so after that. so put alot of thought into selecting your MOS/NEC...... and good luck.

Remembr afqt is composed of only math and english.
So if your great at those 2 subjects but never took a tech class or was just plain lacked street smarts your gt may still be low. I scored an afqt of 65 and was like the bottom 3% of my highschool class and still got a 119 gt and a mm (mech maint) of 127. Which pretty much meant I could get any job in the Marines. The whole test is ******* stupid anyways. Knowing math and english doesnt mean a bullet is going to not hurt as much.

as far as the scores showing how smart you are, they definately don't. i scored ridiculously well, but there are FAR more intelligent people here that scored way less.
it all depends on how good you are at taking standardized tests

yeah ...your job eligibility depends on the field where you score the strongest...i fucked up and got a 64 but my math skills were high enough for to be a electronics technician
