I would assume the car was running if he was sitting at a red light.

Air bags typically don't have sensors in the rear on older cars. The damage isn't that bad in the front so i could see them not deploying. On an older car, lots of times when the air bags deploy the insurance company totals the vehicle. So they don't want them to deploy unless it is necessary to prevent premature totaling of the car and possible injury if it is not needed. It would depend on where the sensors are placed and where the impact is aswell. I know on a 93 foxbody I was looking at there were two sensors, one behind each headlight.

Airbags have a reserve supply of energy to deploy. If your car died while driving and you coasted into someone's back bumper hard enough, they absolutely would deploy.

i thought then only airbag sensor on our cars was the one that is under the center console? and i just figured they would have them deploy because with a rear end crash, the force is going to push you into the steering wheel just as if you were in a head on collision.

I took my front end completely apart and back together and never saw any sensors.

Yeah that's the only airbag thing Ive seen and Ive had my car completely gutted. Unless there are some behind the dash?

How's that? I can understand a little recoil, but nothing like a head-on.

unless im thinking wrong, your sitting still and get hit from a good speed from behind, that force is going to push you forward.

Your thinking wrong, how is a force pushing the object your sitting in forward also causing you to go forward? You will be pushed into the back of the seat, not forward, which is also why the airbags didn't go off. I mean technically your getting pushed forward, but your getting pushed forward because your seat is pushing you forward.

Crazy damage though! I really hope the guy in the Lumina was hauling ***, otherwise I don't like my chances if something like that ever happens to me!

Yea your right. I was thinking wrong. I forgot the simple dynamics problem... I feel retarded now.. I kept thinking the force would transfer to you causing you to go forward but a simple thought was you say still and the car goes forward. My bad
