Sound clip of stock exhaust, open y pipe???
Anyone have a sound clip/video of an LS1 *completely stock exhaust with catback removed? So just open at the end of the Y pipe? Just wondering how it sounds, if it is too loud and could get me pulled over quickly or not. I am debating the removal of the stock catback on my 98 Z/28 (slight damage). If no one has a clip/video, do you think it's loud enough to get me pulled over even if I keep the RPM under 3k?

Yea that's the main reason why I'm worried, California isn't exactly friendly towards modified cars hah. Yea it still has stock manifolds and cats, but then again it wouldn't be going through the very restrictive stock muffler... No thanks on the stock catback... once I can I'm gonna pickup a TSP rumbler catback. In the meantime, probably open Y pipe if it's not too loud.

you should be fine for the cops, ive seen a video before of one like what your looking for and its not that loud. If you had the cats gutted or removed it would be a different story

Yea that's what people are telling me on here... I just have stock manifolds/cats/y pipe so I guess I'll be fine. Still wont pass visual test hah. F it.

I used to drive around with my cutout open all the time and never got pulled over for sound. If your going to remove the stock catback though, go to a muffler shop and have them put a bullet muffler and some pipe with a turn down before the rear axle. It will give some tone and sound much better than just open.

I dont think it would be that loud. just go ahead and remove your stock catback and add a dumped tip on the y pipe. =]
I have manis, no cats, stock y pipe, LM1 dumped, super stupid loud, in the process of adding a spintech pro street exhausted dumped as well see if it changes a bit. Got caught once, quiet when you let off the pedal. =]

my best friend has that exact setup on his 01
it sounds good i think, a little like his magnaflows sounded on his 3800 v6.
it is louder than with the muffler obviously but is not loud.

this is my 98 z28, stock ls1, stock manifold and cat, cut after the y-pipe, before the axle. no turn down, no more cat-back . I run it like that since august 2010 and i've only been pulled over once since . where I live, Cops pull over every single bike for an muffler check and even stock bike with stock muffler ( harley and SS). all ricer got pulled over also
it's not too loud but I get some rasp. if you do that way, be prepare to have some ratle since your y-pipe braket near right side of the tranny is your only hanger. in the long run, it will fatigue and knock on the driveshaft safety loop/ or the driveshaft it-self, same thing for your right side flexpipe...
but for price vs performance vs sound, you can't beat it!!
good luck!

If anyone is looking for loud and for it to actually sound good go tsp duals with sweet thunders, by far the best sound, i will never ever go back to a y pipe ever lol, i also picked up a good amount with duals over a y, car feels way stronger all threw the Rpms range
