AUSTRALIA has lost two icons in a single week with the deaths of Steve Irwin and Peter Brock, federal Opposition Leader Kim Beazley said this evening.
Brock, a 61-year-old motor sport legend, was killed in an accident at the Targa West rally in Western Australia today.
On Monday, Irwin, a conservationist and television personality, was killed by a stingray in Queensland.
"Sadness twice in one week that two Australians icons have gone at virtually the same time," Mr Beazley said in Sydney.
Mr Beazley said Brock deserved his iconic status because of the length of his motor racing career and because of his contributions to road safety campaigns.
"In some sports you flash across the sky like a comet," he said.
"He was the long-distance man.
"And so, over successive years, generations of Australians got to comprehend his talent.
"And, of course, he embedded himself deeply in public campaigns like the road safety campaigns."
Mr Beazley expressed the condolences of the Labor Party to Mr Brock's family, the Holden team and all motor sport fans.
