don't understand though, suppose there wasn't a lake there? how'd they open and close the hatch without flooding the inside?

I would think whoever put it in the lake set it on its course...got out of it, closed the hatch, and watched it drive into the lake. It was also probably pulled from the water before opening the hatch. At that depth, and with that large of a pocket of air inside the tank, it would be nearly impossible for any human to posess enough strength to lift the hatch. The pressure would be too great. Not to say that water didn't leak into it while it was in the lake. That being said though, that layer of mud and silt probably kept the water from penetrating the hull of the tank. Absolutely AMAZING, great find and thanx for posting!!

Where did it say that water wasn't in the tank? I thought it just said oil and fuel didn't leak out.

yea there was definitly water in the tank, look at the water fall coming out of the hatch. it is a deisel engine though, so as long as it wasn't in salt water, it should start right up.

The inside was filled up, but the peat it was buried in preserved it. That, along with the cold waters helped I imagine. If there would have been a dead body in the tank, it would have been preserved down to the skin. Peat does that.

Thats awesome. Thanks for posting, I am a huge WWII machinery fan, more planes than anything else though. But I can appreciate old tanks as well.
